re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

Would it be cheaper to get an civilian style rolling stock ship? Like those ships designed to haul cars and trucks across the oceans. Although LPDs are big, they still seem to not being cost effective. A billion dollar ship can only carry 800 men and few tanks at a time. A civilian style tolling stock ship can easily carry several times that, while at much lower cost and similar cruising speed.

I would say that a LPD is actually more than a mere transport ship. It's also a base of operation able to provide a land fighting capabilities, logistics and C4I for a expeditionary/task force. If you were to use your normal civilian Roll-On Roll-Off (Ro-Ro), you would need to add weapon, military sensors and communication equipment and modify the hull to accommodate landing craft to be able to do the same job, and that process would probably cost a lost of space in the ship. Some navy does have Ro-Ro, but they are not intended to be spearheading an expedition, their use is actually to transport equipment between port.

LDP are designed for a very specific task which is amphibious warfare

Why don't you go ahead and ask the US Navy the same question.

Ahem.. because the USN ships are built to military standards. A R-ro ship would go down to visit Davey Jones if struck by a mine or certain air launched weapons. they simply do not have the compartmentation similar to a Naval vessel.

Nice photos..but I don't see any lockers for storage. Curious..

This is a typical USN berthing compartment. you sleep on your locker. Trust me.. on the 1975 photo not much has changed..Although all ships will be eventually re-fitted with a "rack/bunk" that will allow a sailor to sit up. the newer class ships have this type of bunk.

Yeah, don't see any locker, their bunk are 2.5 stories (top on to put their stuff). While it seems that the 071 bunk have slightly more headroom per bed, the USN can squeeze 3 stories of functional bedspace. Perhaps I can deduce the following:
1. PLAN ships (at least the 071) have lower ceiling for their interior.
2. They have yet adjust to long term offshore operation - even with their transition to blue-water navy, PLAN is still predominately brown-water one and that means they've yet adjust all their aspects of operations to long period at seas. If out-of-base operation period are short, then 071's way is simpler for all (less packing and unpacking); but to operate in such a tempo as the USN do, the ship is your home and that makes the USN way more efficient.

I believe the 071 photos showing the living quarters for the marines on board, which means they do not intend to stay there for long as PLAN doesn't deploy marines on board the 071 for prolonged period of time. Here are two photos of the sailors' living quarters on 113 Qingdao, sailors have had their personally lockers since 053H2G Jiangwei.

Holy smokes!!! If that's a real pic of the inside of the Type 071 then it has the space to hold at least 32 IFVs (estimating by counting the lights and corresponding space). Assuming that weight is not an issue.

Nice to see a picture where all four lanes are in use. I think they could have more than 32 IFV's, I assume that it was laid out for a complete battalion group of some 40 armoured vehicles.

A curious mix of vehicles, by the way, ZBD05 AFV's and ZTS63A amphibious light tanks. That must be 164 Marine Brigade, after they got ZBD05 to replace their ZSD63C's and ZBD86B's and before they replaced the ZTS63A's by ZTD05's.

The new racks in the SSGN are pretty nice. I have been able to see them and go through most of the vessel...except the enginerering/reactor spaces twoce now.

Most of the racks I see in the PLAN LPD appear to be two high with an area on top where you can see sailors personal luggage and other items stored. I hope they secure them up there a little better than is shown, particularly in fowl weather or heavy sea states.
