re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

and looking at the construction of the USS San Antonio Class LPDs, it looks like pace is same as Type 071 LPDs, actually Type 071 might seem just that little bit faster, 2 launches within 12 months

But san antonios are being built more consistently over extended periods of time... so yeah.

Before the 071, China have never built a LPD, plus the LCAC have yet go into serial production, and PLAN Marines are of far smaller in strength then USMC, it's understandable they goes slow and smaller in numbers.

And, it seems evident that 071 is smaller than the San Antonio Class too...

What's the strength of PLA Marines these days? Are they still just 2 brigades with 12,000 troops?

Yes, 1 and 164 Brigades, both at Zhanjiang (like the landing ships of 6 Flotilla).

Their organisation is quite unusual: each has an amphibious armoured regiment of one tank battalion and two armoured infantry battalions. Plus one SP artillery battalion and three infantry battalions (for garrison duties on the South China Sea islands), combat support and logistic support units.

1 Brigade has ZTD05, ZBD05 and PLZ07B-122
164 Bde has ZTZ63A, ZBD86D and ZSD63C, PLZ89-122.

There is no reason for PLAN to build Type 071s at the same pace as San Antonio class. PLAN has different responsibilities and requirements and budget than USN. PLAN also has to train people to use these ships, whereas USN is just replacing older LPDs.

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

yes of course the two navys cant be compared, and that was not what i was trying to protray, infact it was just a observation

however a quick look at the geography surrounding China and its territorys, its becomes pretty clear that amphious operations are a requirment for PLAN, not only a requirment a fundamental part of the overall naval stratedgy

also recently PLAN has been carrying out 3D landing operations, i.e. from sea, land and air, now that they have more LPDs being built, this also brings it to the next type of operation, which is over the Horizon amphibious landings, which is the crucial to blue water navy

but for Over the Horizon operation there is 2 assets which is a pre-request, a landing dock and helicopters, both that China has in the form of the Type 071 LPD equipped with hover-craft and helos, faster than IFVs and APCs

with 3-4 LPDs sitting 10-15km off shore, they could rapidly deploy dozen or so Z8s dropping in few hundred troops, advantage being, this has element of suprise and can perform out-flanking manouvres without the needs for slow land forces to face a counter-attack

China will make more LPDs to complete this kind of new warfare and move away from the traditional beech landings where on mass landing ships are used

I have been told that the 4th PLAN Type 071 LPD is either close to being luanched or recently was. Is there any truth to this?

Four of these vessels is a vast improvement for the PLAN in terms of amphibious capability.
