071 LPD thread

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

just a thought, China imported, 14 x PC-2.5/2.6 engines for use on 3 LPDs between 2007 and 2011 from France, if China has a 4th one under construction what engine is it using?

It is understood China already localised the engine..

does any one think the 071 design is interesting in that the beam is really narrow for a LPD? infact the length to beam ration is close to that of a frigate than a traditional LPD. which means under the constraint of a propulsion and top speed and the minimum requirement for the rear ramp for the airchusion landing ship, the designers really were trying to strech the design into a frigate like design.

also, as far as I know the ship is designed by team at 701 institute who traditionally has designed the 053 and 054 series line.

which brings this observation.
coupled with a conservative propulsion these LPD are more akin to a scaled up version of generalized intervention frigate design of Absalon class support ship of Royal Danish Navy?

There is also rumour fleetingly floating on HSH that 071's current armament is not its final configuration. whatever that means.
if you look at 071's forward area it is really overbuilt with two decks but only one 76mm airdefense gun.

May be, just may be they will put in a 130mm gun or even a VLS set at next available opportunity. which will brings the 071 design closely inline with a big, land attack frigate with an amphibious capability.

for reference.

San Antonio class has a length to beam about 6.5, 208/32 meters
FREMM has a length to beam about 7.1, 142/20 meters
Absalon class has a length to beam about 7.05, 137.6/19.5

071 is about 7.5 aggressive for a LPD, right in middle for a traditional frigate.

There will probably just be three 071's.

China has been producing Pielstick diesels for frigates and amphibious ships since the 1990's, reportedly in Shaanxi. But since they pay licence fees, they report to France what they are producing.

Doesn't make sense. LPD needs as much space as possible to pack marines And equipment for amphibious assault. Bring in those system will reduce space and require more manpower. Plus the speed of 071 is that slow of 22knots. It can't keep up with the main strike forces...

Doesn't make sense, for a Pure LPD, but makes sense if it is something close to the Absalon class which is nominally classified as a "Support" ship. and goes less than 24 kts.

If Volume needs to be maximized then the length-to-beam must be minimized. you trade off more top speed or put in more propulsion.

instead the designers opted to conserve propulsion but inorder to trade off for a still respectable top speed length-to-beam got increased.

and reserved big space on front deck, infact this is the biggest wasted frontdeck space i have seen on LPDs.

Perhaps the PLAN was trying to conserve fuel cost. Oil prices can only go up per year.

If I am not wrong, endurance class LSD of republic Singapore navy is something similar to 071 only is, it's much smaller. It too has a big front deck fitted with an oto melera only.

Very nice. Both 071s with their pennant numbers, and three of the Type 072 LSTs. The PLAN is modernizing and growing its amphibious capability significantly...and a 3rd 071 coming out.

As the PLAN has been building these new LPDs, they US has continued with its own San Antonio LPD vessels. Here are the nine vessels built so far, since the first, LPD-17, USS San Antonio was commissioned in 2006:

Very similar in appearance and function.

and looking at the construction of the USS San Antonio Class LPDs, it looks like pace is same as Type 071 LPDs, actually Type 071 might seem just that little bit faster, 2 launches within 12 months
