It is neither:
HD 6 launched 12.12.11 is Hull 13 (547 LINYI).
HP 7 launched a few days earlier, 10.12.11, is Hull 12 (572 YUEYANG).

That is correct, but I added the "new one coming out of HP", the one they are about to launch, which would make 14. Here she is with the new Type 056 OPV nearing completion as well.

Why does China needs 14 of these and pushing them out as fast as they can build them? Sounds like an overkill. Shouldn't the effort be used for new designs?

If you look at how many old frigates the PLAN has, 14 (and anywhere beyond that until you get to 20) of these frigates will be needed to replace them. And there's not a need to start producing a new design if the current ship is enough for the navy.

But these LDPs are not 1970s frigates that China produced cheaply. These LDPs are anything but cheap even by China's costing and would even well be pride-of-place C3 flagships in any navies other than US. You just need 2 of these to show-the-flags off Somali or the Scarborough Shoals, but 14 of these constitute a full amphibious beach assault pumping out at least 7 full PLA Marine battalions. Add the few hundreds of LST, LSH of all sizes and China can literally throw divisions of Marines in the initial assault waves onto a beach-head. It would better make sense if China just produce half and work on LHDs capable of large scale helicopter assault/support with UAV complement. This would present a more balanced and potent assault task force like what the USN had put together.

You've misread the previous posts. the 14th hull jeff was talking about was 054A frigates, not 071 LPDs...

Only 3 071 LPDs have been built.

No, not at all. They have a LOT of antiquated frigates that need to be replaced, they have a long coastline to defend, and most importantly now, they have a LOT of sea lane attachments that are very critical to their economy and supplies. All need protecting and in today's world they need modern vessels to do so.

So, once they find a good modern design with good capabilities that will remain competitive for the next 20-30 years, they build those out to meet their needs.

If they contstanatly design new vessels and only produce a small number of them, then the training, maintenance, and logistical issues cost too much to maintain. The Type 054A is such a good design that they can produce them in numbers and maximize their capabilities whileminimizing their costs.

The Type 052C looks to be the same with eight or more of them being produced.

As regards the Type 071 LPD...same thing holds. Three have been built but I would not be surprised to see 6-8 of those too. The show the flag yes, and are good for humanitarian...but their real purpose is amphibious/air assault and having 6-8 very strong LPD platforms sends a message to potential adversaries regarding the PLAN's capabilities and thus act as a deterrent.

just a thought, China imported, 14 x PC-2.5/2.6 engines for use on 3 LPDs between 2007 and 2011 from France, if China has a 4th one under construction what engine is it using?
