I certainly can't say...but if they could transfer a large nmber of the newer 053s to the Coast Guard and then form up an actual single Caost Guard command encompassing these others, they could certainly do a lot better all around with that better equipment and a more structurally sound command chain it seems to me.

40-50 Type 056 OPV vessels would be nice for the PLAN.

Depends on when the newer 053s will be displaced from PLAN. By the time that happens, it may be economically more feasible to simply build more 056 hulls with sensors/armament more suited to CG role. If 40-50 056s get built for PLAN, the scale of economics may make building another 10 hulls for a unified CG not that much more than refurbing 10 newer 053s.

So then, that is probably the bridge and mast structure for number 2 at HP, correct?

It's the funnel, rear mast, and possible hangar module, I believe the bridge and main mast is a separate module.

The structure of the Chinese coastal patrols are not as clearly defined as in the US (see the five dragons). The structure is very fluent and PLAN has a role in coastal patrols too. The role of the Chinese coast guarding organizations are defined as:

Patrol of territorial waters and disputed territories
Anti-smuggling, anti-piracy
Maritime policing and ship inspections
Harbour and coastal security
Research and survey
Search and Rescue
Fisheries protection

I think the Type 056 are better able to contribute to these goals than the cutters and older type 053's.

As for more older type 053's to be transferd to the coast guards ? I think it's highly likely as newer ships comes online.

This year a PLA general has called for China to form a dedicated coast guard when or if it will happen we shall see.

Although Chinese maritime law enforcement agencies are fragmented at the moment each branch is fast building new cutter, including larger, over 1,000t displacement and helicopter capable ones. I very much doubt they are still willing to accept hand me down Jianghus from the navy. In terms of large lawenforcement cutters (over 1,000t), CMS has 27, FLEC has 10, MSA has 3, CCG has 2. They are all building brand new ships like no tomorrow, for example CMS has five new large cutters on order, MSA is building a 5,000t Deep Water style ship. So I think 056s will stay with PLAN and do their job as a basic littoral combatant, Jianghus will serve the remainder of their life with PLAN and then scraped or resold to client states. PLAN however does want to get to the law enforcement role as well, that's why they specifically modified FF553 and 555 as SCS patrol ships with added machine guns, inflatable rigid hull interdiction boat, and LRAD non-lethal weapon.

They can charge some money for civilian tours of retired Jianghus, maybe even take them out for a ride.

I went on board the museum ship HMS Belfast when I happened to be in London a couple years back. Her engine room was a gritty place and was not well ventilated. It's probably going to be hot when the engines are running too.

So far only 2 x 053 class frigates have been transferred to Coast Guard service.

More recently, 4 x 053 class frigates were decommissioned and sold, I think 2 to Burma and 2 to Bangladesh. No additional 053 class frigates have been transferred to Chinese CG service.

The future of old Jianghu class ships are uncertain at this point.

There are still 21 more Type 053 Jianghu's floating in the PLAN. Give it some time.

is there? do u mean Type 053H and H1 Jianghus, cus theres less than that

if u are counting all I-V then theres around 30 in service maybe few less

nevertheless if China make a staggering 16 Type 054As in under a decade, then theres no issue making dozens of Type 056 in the coming decade, maybe even replacing all the older Type 053s, the rate might be even faster as Chinese shipyards are better equipped and better trained and more experienced than ever

it is not impossible to imagine 4 Type 056s per year, thats 30+ before 2020

PLAN commissioned 4 054A in 2008, zero in 2009, 3 in 2010, 2 in 2011, and will commission another 4 this year. So if there is a need to quickly replace Jianghus and Hainans, the capability is there to produce 056 quickly. With the current lines running at HP and ZH a minimum of 4 can be produced every year, if Jiangnan, Dalian, Wuchang, and Bohai join in the rate can be as high as 10 per year. I don't believe PLAN will buy 056 at such high rate, but once the first batch is proven satisfactory they probably will buy 6 a year.

I'am talking about the 21 Type 053 Jianghu's from I to V and there are still 14 more significantly improved Type 053H2/3 Jiangwei's that are build in the 1990's. These will probably still serve in the PLAN for many more year's to come and perhabs beyond 2020.

commissioning is done later, laying the keel and launching is the time i was thinking, and they are launching 2 maybe 3 per year
