Unknown 056 at a undisclosed location.

HArd to make all of that out. They seem like more complete subsections sitting there.

We know they are already building one each at HD and HP...but if they are already building them at other places I would be surprised. I would have expected the first two to come out and be checked out before more production went on...maybe they will build 4 or 6 to start.

Not sure if 056 can keep up with 022s top speed to act as a "lead ship," but certainly it can act as a command ship of the sorts. It is a corvette, but I expect it to have modern C4I capabilities and associated CIC that we've come to see on smaller, more modern surface combatants.
UAVs/helicopter from 056 could provide long range guidance for 022's missiles but Y-8GX variants like the ones equipped with sky master radar and KJ-200 should be able to work just as well. In fact we heard about 022s training with GX planes for long range anti ship missions a few years ago already.

Those are two different thing, 022 FAC are more in line with the traditional Soviet missile-boat doctrine - no info if PLAN have made modifications to that doctrine, with the likes of integrating over-the-horizon target illuminating capabilities from other platforms and the necessary datalink; if the necessary datalink have been established, they could've let the 022 as dedicated attack pack with C4ISR facility on land / airborne platform, 056 not necessary in this.

Whereas 056 thus far lean on the contemporary multi-role corvette that just about every other navy that'd field corvettes as part of their surface combatants.

Should 056 is, as said by many, primary to replace the 037 series submarine chasers still in service, that'd be a major qualitative improvement, though in terms of support facilities and personnel requirements also requires a significant investment as well.

What are two different things?

It's been widely established that 022s are meant to be operated in conjunction with off board, OTH targeting (already are) and likely within a larger part of china's C4ISR system for the westpac in future, operating nearer to china's coast and SCS. I'm not sure what the soviet missile boat doctrine was but 022s are certainly meant to fire missiles OTH with extensive datalinking. Tphuang's posted quite a few articles detailing exercises in which this is carried out on the forum and his blog over the years.
056's probably won't be able to keep up or provide augmentation to guidance for 022's missiles -- that role will be taken by GX aircraft and other sources. But they can act as a command ship (don't be fooled by the word "command" as if it's something unique to 056. 054/A, DDGs upward from the refitted 052 can act as a "command" ship in the same way)

Whereas 056 thus far lean on the contemporary multi-role corvette that just about every other navy that'd field corvettes as part of their surface combatants.

Imo replace the old sub chasers, and some roles which current smaller frigates and patrol craft take too. These are almost certainly going to be built en masse and act as a near seas patrol, ASW, lightweight surface strike asset.

Small correction, it's now confirmed there are four under construction. Two are on berth at Hudong-Zhonghua, one almost completed hull in the assembly hall at Huangpu, and parts for another one visible outside the hall, my guess is that it's taking shape behind her older sister.

This probably will be the Chinese version of the LCS. This ship will be used for littoral missions. I don't think this ship will see action in the Gulf of Aden like what some are saying on this forum. This ship will probably be the replacement for the old type 037 missile boats rather than the 053H Jianghu class frigates. I think China need to have two versions of this ship one for general littoral combat missions and one dedicated ASW version. ASW warfare is the weak link in China's navy right now. The reasons for having this ship is one to have an economically cheap ship to procure and operate for brown and green water tasks in order to free up the frigates and destroyers for blue water tasks. Although smaller than the type 053's this ship will likely pack a bigger punch than the old Jianghu's and many times more than the type 037's that it will replace. Two the Taiwanese are now developing a strategy of using smaller ships to overwelm the PLAN. And this ship could play an importend part countering that strategy. Very excited to see this ship come out.

So, four under construction, 2 each at HP and HD, and then the pics of this other location? Sounds like they have made up their mind and are comfortable with whatever design they have and are going to move forward without a drawn out testing of the first couple before committing to lserial production.

Interesting, and will be more interesting to see how many other places build them...and ultimately how many.
