So, four under construction, 2 each at HP and HD, and then the pics of this other location? Sounds like they have made up their mind and are comfortable with whatever design they have and are going to move forward without a drawn out testing of the first couple before committing to lserial production.

Interesting, and will be more interesting to see how many other places build them...and ultimately how many.

I was pointed out on CDF by iconoclast that the mystery 056 is actually the upper structure module for the fourth hull outside HP's assembly hall. It's made in a separate plant onsite and I assume it's transported and will be hoisted in place as a single module. It's amazing that HP is able to do that given its extremely limited factory space.

So then, that is probably the bridge and mast structure for number 2 at HP, correct?

These ships will be fighting pirates... in China's EEZ as some of you well know China doesn't have a dedicated coast guard and instead rely on five different organizations (the five dragons) to patrol it's coasts. China's coastal patrols mainly consist out of small vessels and very few aircraft. The Chinese coast guard only has one or two cutters and two type 053 that where transfer to them and converted in to cutters. These new ships with their modern communication and targeting/surveillance systems and the ability to operate helicopters on them will be a welcomed and much needed boost to China's coastal patrols.

Well, I think they will fill that mission somewhat, along with litoral ASW patrolling principally...but they will do so as PLAN vessels don't you think?

Perhaps more of the older patrol vessels will now be trasfered to China's Coast Guard.

Or do you believe some of these will end up Coast Guard vessels? Seems like the PLAN will get them and allow for other of the most recent 053 FFGs to go over to the Coast Guard.

The structure of the Chinese coastal patrols are not as clearly defined as in the US (see the five dragons). The structure is very fluent and PLAN has a role in coastal patrols too. The role of the Chinese coast guarding organizations are defined as:

Patrol of territorial waters and disputed territories
Anti-smuggling, anti-piracy
Maritime policing and ship inspections
Harbour and coastal security
Research and survey
Search and Rescue
Fisheries protection

I think the Type 056 are better able to contribute to these goals than the cutters and older type 053's.

As for more older type 053's to be transferd to the coast guards ? I think it's highly likely as newer ships comes online.

This year a PLA general has called for China to form a dedicated coast guard when or if it will happen we shall see.

5 dragons:

China Marine Surveillance - State Ocean Adminstration
Coast Guards - Ministry of Public Security / Public Security Border troops / Armed Police.
Maritime Saftey Administration - Ministry of Transportation
China Fisheries Law Enforcement Command - Ministry of Agriculture
Customs - General Administration of Customs.

Bewildering isn't it.

Actually In the East China Sea China Marine Surveillance is most active.
while in SCS the Fisheries Law Enforcement is most active.
Coast Guards is active in 12 NM territorial water and
Maritime Saftey Administration is active in ports and coastal esturaries and transportation hubs.
Customs is active whereever there is smuggling, most of time along side Coast Guards.

We heard that there will be around 40 - 50 units of 056OPV, however to complement 5 dragons plus replacing 037 & OPV rules, are we expecting increase from 50 to 70 units in different categories.

I certainly can't say...but if they could transfer a large nmber of the newer 053s to the Coast Guard and then form up an actual single Caost Guard command encompassing these others, they could certainly do a lot better all around with that better equipment and a more structurally sound command chain it seems to me.

40-50 Type 056 OPV vessels would be nice for the PLAN.
