The 056 looks like the aggressor here, with a sudden surprise attack on the enemy ship. At that range it should first be targeting the main gun on that ship, though. :p
Type-056 represented is unlikely to be the aggressor (if we are interpreting the image)....as it is the worst position for a ship to be in, if "aggresion" with MG was on captains mind.

For a Sovremenny class it could be different as she have twin-barrel artillery at stern which can pound the bridge and mission kill the 'said' ship in the first shot itself.

The 056 was forced into that position. It was shielding Chinese fishing boats on it's starboard that were under attack. The captain bravely put himself in the line of fire in order to warn off the philipino ship. Continued machine gun fire from the philipino ship meant there was no option but to take out the machine gun post. The goal wasn't to sink the ship, but to end the firing on the defenceless fishermen who had nothing but piled up fishing nets to hide behind.

If the philipino ship started with machine gun, return in same caliber atleast till you get into a better poistion. To open up with your MG when the other guys MG can paint your entire hull length, is plain stupid.

It is for sure the aggressor in this photo. It's opened up on the PN ship with its main gun at close range while the PN ship's main gun is still in forward position. This can only mean a surprise attack because they would have seen each other coming from a long way further than pictured, and up to that moment had not engaged each other. This suggests a standoff with these ships circling each other or something similar, with the stalemate ending by the 056's attack on the GdP.

If AShMs are not involved, the 056 is actually in a "Crossing the T" position, a classic naval warfare tactic which became obsolete due to missiles but of course, since BRP GdP does not have missile armament, it's a viable scenario.

I think it's best to just leave the artist depiction as just that, anything beyond that is merely conjecture.

Crossing the T was only viable when a ships armaments are configured in such a way as to allow the ship to deliver a powerful broadside. For example, 19th century ships-of-the-line and 20th century battleships. The idea was to maximize the number of guns that could be brought to bear on the enemy, while minimizing the number of guns that the enemy can bring to bear on you. Crossing the T is not advantageous when each ship only has a single frontal turret, as you only end up exposing more of your ship to the enemy.

Where the hell did you get all this from? It's certainly something you can pull out of your ass, but definitely not something you can pull out of the picture just sayin. :)

It's quite amazing really. Only a few months ago people were thinking only 4 056s in total may be produced for the HK garrison now that projection has quintupled.

-well that escalated quickly-

Might as well keep those shipyards busy since the Global economic downturn is continuing and help reduce the massive steel inventories in China.
