No, it def is unlikely that we are only gonna see 055s.

Smaller ships have their place (052D isn't even that small as well).
I myself is a big fan of the 052 series. If this ship can future evolve to include electric propulsion, even just CODLOG would be a great improvement. I think it would be good if 052DL is further evolving into a pair of CODLOG types: one general type like the current 052DL, and another one which focus on ASW warfare with larger hangers for two Z-20ASW and less VLS. That would be a very nice addition.

In my opinion, once the PLAN already have 24 052DL, they can more to this new "052E" platform with the two variants. I think the 055 is very good to have a large "cruiser" ship to the fleet. But I only see the future naval warfare preferring a more distributed overall concept. 16 to 24 055 is the most the PLAN should have, and that should only constitute at most a quarter of the "ocean-going" destroyer fleet.

052D is fitted to its max. It has no more potential. 055 and bigger frigate is the future.
It's always the capacity to stay without supply for a long period that bring the need for bigger ships. If enough supply ships are available it's not a problem but they can become juicy targets and need escorts.

The size limit the engine and power generation. I firmly believe 052 series need replacement down the line by a wider hull design, if not by 055.

With the increasing number of 055, the construction cost will be lower and lower, and the future will be 055

052D baseline is getting too old. It’s a highly evolved 052B, which itself was based on 051B, a 90s era design.

Since 052B, the design gained significant weight, but propulsion power was not increased. This has reduced top speed and possibly also its endurance if fuel tanks remained the same. The ship is likely constrained in its electrical power output, limiting the kinds of sensors and future energy weapons it might be equipped with.

I think it is time for a fresh design.

O52d series is almost at it's end. They need to build enough of it to comfortably replace all the 052, 051b, 052c and sovs that are still in service and possibly also 052c. The future is with type 055. There is a lot of room to growth in there. It is just so much better platform. At this point, I would not be surprised if they build 30 055s.
