I guess they don't care if it was a little boy or a fat man either. What's in a name if it does the same thing?

Nanjing will definitely be a name that is on the list. It fulfills all necessary requirement to become a Destroyer's name for being a major city. And no matter when or why it is chosen, for political effect or randomly by chance, you can be sure that it will sting the Japanese no matter what. And why should the Chinese care? It was a Japanese crime, after all. It SHOULD sting them - especially because it would be the member of th East Sea Fleet. China should not hold back, in that regard, especially Nanjing is a legit contender anyway.

Well, no sympathies from my side. Shouldnt have raped that city back then, if they didnt want to face a powerful warship named after a city that they sacked so brutally. What goes around....
well, as a major city Nanjing has the equal right to name a major combat vessel. But that was not my point against it naming the first in class. Neither was and am I interested in "sting" Japan, you can see my objection of naming after "Diaoyu", "Taiwan" and "Nansha" etc.

My objection is to the "regional bidding" and "tragic awarding effect" in principle, not specifically to Nanjing. I think China should focus on what herself sees as strong fighting spirit, not on "sting" others regardless the past (not saying to forget). That is maturity and grandeur. I don't want to see China to equal herself to some others like what Jobjed mentioned in #1869 + Kaga

To be honest the very suggestion that China would name a new destroyer something like Diaoyu or Taiwan or Nansha is freaking stupid and flamebait by whoever mentioned it in the first place.

Looking at the names China has given all of its major naval ships, none of them have been anywhere near politically controversial. For instance, there were those ridiculous notions in the years of Varyag's refit that it would be renamed freaking Shi Lang for the political connotations.

Whereas in reality, the Chinese Navy has actually gone to great lengths to deliberately avoid names with political connotations and focused exclusively on relatively non controversial geographical names instead.... and the fact that people think China would be interested in those sort of politically loaded names may be more reflective of how those individuals perceive China and its navy than what they are actually like in reality.

Why do we spend so much time and space arguing what the name of the first 055 DDG?
A clear evidence that the community run out of fresh material to discuss about the 055 class DDG, and would likely remain so until the said 1st hull finally takes shape, along with a superstructure that'd clearly tell its identity.

At this point, I just hope it won't be years before we get a glimpse of the CIC. With all that extra internal space, I'd be disappointed if 055 uses the same consoles as found on 052D and 056. It should at least feature the tri-panel consoles seen on the Euro DDGs and even the upgraded Tico.
