Isn't it bad luck to celebrate the building of a ship before it's done?

On the contrary, isn't it good luck to celebrate the moment when construction first starts? Such as the cutting of the first steel traditionally?

Celebration of commencement of something big with ceremonies is a common practice. You find it in weddings, ground breaking for new buildings, factories, bridges, schools, etc. The finished products will benefit many people, but will be eyesores to some.

Au contraire, not from where I'm from. Be it cutting the first steel, laying the first brick or putting in the first steel girder. It's all time for celebration!
Heck I hope you celebrate when your girl is first pregnant and many moons the baby actually comes out!

If this is legit. Doesn't it confirm that the 'Type 055' is the official name for its class?

Most probably so, since the new design is far bigger than the 052 series so it'd require a new hull; and nothing indicates that why they'd skip the "055" numbering and make the new DDG class as "057" or something else.

Considering that the superstructure mockup was up early this year and the design was finalized within the year, and proceed to actual construction this month, all within the same year, so it's obviously on an accelerated schedule, and most of its major components are those already installed on 052D, but with more VLS modules...that leaves its propulsion system, though.

I don't know which one to believe. I'm leaning toward the giant robot.

So yeah, I have my doubts...

.... what happened to the crispy pig? You can't have a commencement ceremony without it.

Actually, even in China this news is met with some suspicion, eventhough its initial appearance (and quickly withdrawn) meet the past experience with "accidental leaks". So those pics where just to laugh it off as saying "it proved nothing".

So, it really provides no solid evidence that the Type 055 does initiate its lead ship construction. The only way to know for sure, would be if and when 6 months from now, a new and bigger DDG hull begins to take shape in Shanghai shipyard.

Despite the ease to which this photo could have been doctored, I think the authority's response is indicative to the true nature of it. After all, many early photos of planes and ships are completely blurred and shadowed and just as easily PSed. It is how the authorities react to the posting of such photos, and the eventual revelation of clearer photos that gives earlier photos their credence.

We have the first, it will now possibly be a six month wait for clear photos

I just wrote a piece about it... since there was not much to say really about this blue tarp, I tried to give as much details as possible based on the Type 055 model in Wuhan...

China May Have Started Construction of Next Generation Destroyer Type 055 for the PLAN
PwLUPyK.jpg

A picture has just emerged on the Chinese internet showing that construction of the first Type 055 destroyer may have started. The Type 055 guided missile destroyer is the next generation destroyer designed for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).
