But are we sure those words are not just PS job? It seems a little too early to start building 055 DDG now. I hope it's true anyway.

I think timing is good and this doesn't mean they are going to launch the thing like next month

If it's start of steel cutting then we are still a long time away from seeing the ship under construction and launch is probably like 1-2 years away easily

When they cut the first steel that means they are making the sheets of steel that will be fabricated for module construction

For example the first steel for the UK Queen Elizabeth carrier was cut in July of 2009 and it was only lunched this summer

No question the carrier is much bigger but you get my point

Apparently threads on cjbdy related to the photo are being deleted, which is often an indication of a photo's veracity; in other words, an accidental leak.

It actually isn't that early to expect 055. It'll probably only be launched after one year, if that, given it is a new ship class. Then it'll be at least another year of fitting out and trials, before entering service probably in the second half of 2017, which is more or less when we expect 055 to enter service

This is one of the most significant years for PLAN

2014 killed it

Continued production of Type 056 and variants
Continued work on Type 054A plus variants
On going work on Type 903A and 904 tankers
Commissioning of Type 052C and heavy work on Type 052D plus Dalian starting up
A 4th Type 071 LPD indicting restart of LPD construction and LST units too in the form of Type 072
Two large cutters with one launched
And now pictures of start of Type 055 CG programme

China has really done the number on many naval projects I doubt we will see a year in which so much has happened or maybe we will who knows no one knows

Now only thing that is left is LHD and Carrier construction in addition to the scores of other projects which don't get much attention like submarine rescue ships, surveillance ships and minesweeper etc

If this is legit. Doesn't it confirm that the 'Type 055' is the official name for its class?

Yes and I think the Chinese people must be feeling excited and very proud that today they have launched one of the most powerful naval surface projects in the country's history barring a carrier and LHD

Outside the US and former Soviet Union no other country has the capability to go this big in large numbers

This in my opinion is a very very important step and a very big day for PLAN

I mean just a few years who we were looking at Type 051C and Type 052B and Sovs etc

A new era for PLAN has arrived good luck to them I can only be happy for China to succeed and reach new heights they did good things for Pakistan in the past as such we can only be more happy

Very big news on the Type 055. They've even managed to squeeze it in just before the new year too LOL
If you look at what's in the pipeline, I think 2015 will be just as big as 14. Continued expansion of the 054 class and now the actual building of the 055. A couple more 071s coming online and possibly we'll hear more about the 081 LHD :maybe: I think we'll also see the finalization of the air wing component for the Liaoning as well.

I would not be surprised either if they cut the first steel for the indigenous carrier in 2015, ESPECIALLY if it is somewhat modeled after the Liaoning as oppose to a totally brand new design and/or a true flat deck. First steel cut in 2015, commissioning in 2020 or not too long after. Sounds about right.

Basically by year's end of 2015 here's my general view of PLAN's continued expansion

More 052Ds and 071s
We'll finally know what 055 will look like exactly and many of it's sensor suites and weapon systems!
Possible confirmation of 081 LHD.
CVW component for the Liaoning finalized.
Possible first steel cut for indigenous carrier (if modeled after Liaoning) and if we're really lucky maybe that of 081 LHD (here's hoping ;) )
Possible serial production of J15S.
Taihangs becoming operational. ;)

I'm probably missing many more major developments but I'll keep an eye out for these big ones.

* the continued free fall of oil prices will also benefit China's real GDP as a whole. They import most of their crude and the longer crude oil stays low the more savings that will be added to their GDP or at the very least will mitigate some of their declination of their production output in 2014..

Easy buddy. In 2015 I only expect the commissioning of 1 Type 052C, 4 Type 054A, 1 or 2 Type 052D and a number of Type 056's and perhabs 1 Type 071A. That's 6 to 8 major warships! But based on the launch dates in the shipyards this should be possible. I expected many more ships to be commissioned this year but we ended up with just 1 Type 052D and 1 Type 052C but we did get 10 Type 056 commissioned this year! The big news next year for me will still be the forming of the Liaoning air wing.

I'm looking at it holistically :D. Commisionnings of existing class of ships are all good and dandy but for me I also like to take into account the known unknowns.
Knowing the 'first cut steel', a serial production, LRIP etc or even pictures or diagrams of a new class is far more exciting than the commisioning of an existing ship to me but that's me.

Isn't it bad luck to celebrate the building of a ship before it's done?

There is no need to worry as the amount of denigrating, disbelieving and unfounded accusations floating on the internet that follows will be more than enough to restore the cosmic balance and then some. ;)
