Can't see any difference from the last pic of it but i'm surprised to see the civilian one that sat adjacent to it now gone already.

The floating dock 012 was positioned off Building Hall 1 (to the right on the photo in post # 910) to launch, probably 30 April/1 May, the vessel discussed in posts # 892-895. Since this vessel is named HAIYANGSHIYOU (海洋石油)256, it is likely to be used for geological research.

That done, the dock should be ready to move into position off Building Hall 2 to launch 054A HP 6 in the immediate future.

Does anyone else think this looks like the PLAN might be replacing all the Type053s (all sub-types) on a 1 to 1 basis? If that is the case, there might be up to 40 or 50 Type054As before production is over.

I'd love to see the number of 054A/B/C go to 50, but honestly it is unlikely, the cost would be too high, I'd guess the cost of 054A to PLAN, including sub-system and missiles would be around $350M. Export price would be higher, perhaps $400M

Plus 054a, as good as it is, is not cutting edge tech nor design. So were much more likely to see variatons of its design, various b and c models, just like it was done with 053 series. i wouldnt be surprised if five years from now we see a different superstructure, sensor and weapons fit being tested, perhaps versions with larger helo hangar etc etc.

I am convinced that China will replace frigates on a one-to-one basis, but certainly not all by Type 054A. PLAN currently has 29 JIANGHU class frigates of all versions; if you also count the derived JIANGWEI class, you arrive at a total of 43. The last JIANGWEI II’s were built in 2005 and are not going to be replaced any time soon.

The 29 JIANGHU and the 4 JIANGWEI I will probably only be replaced in total by 2025, and the Chinese are not going to build the 054 design for 20 years. There will reportedly be a Type 054B, but even that will probably only be built until 2020, when an entirely new design should make its appearance. Either this new type or the 054B ought to have much improved ASW capabilites as compared to the 054A, which is principally an AAW unit. Some of the JIANGHU’s will reportedly be replaced by Type 056.

The 054A is not meant as an AAW unit. it has good ASW capabilities as a frigate can get.
It might be very good at AAW if compare to the older frigate or even older destroyers. but it is not the AAW slot
