Another new 054A having its bottom repainted and receiving pennant number in a floating drydock.

Now, that was nice!

Huangpu no. 7 LINYI 547 is actually scheduled to commission in North Sea Fleet in September - as tphuang posted way back in January (more precisely in 1 Destroyer Flotilla 14 Frigate Squadron Qingdao-Jiaonan).

Great pictures! The next to arrive at 9 Destroyer Flotilla at Yulin is HD 6 LIUZHOU, scheduled to commission this month. Late 2013 there should be four, replacing 565 and the other three JIANGWEI II frigates.

if we will see 054b in the coming years, and if it turns out to be different enough from 054a, as was 054a from basic 054, then i think we might see a more asw oriented ship. The one-two combo of radars on two biggest masts on 054a might be gone, replaced with just one radar, probably working on x or c bandwidth, with high scanning rates. it will cover the horizon and guide the 32 quad packed missiles. The remaining 16 of the 24 cells of the new VLS in total, will probably be filled with various combinations of rocket assisted torpedos and antship missiles. Perhaps 8 and 8, maybe even 12 and 4. Everything else on the ship may remain similar... I don't believe we will see twin helo hangars without a new, a bit wider, hull. But then that wouldn't be 054b anymore but a new frigate altogether.

Reasoning for all this is that PLAN will by 2015 operate something like 12 long range AAW ships, 16 more medium range air defense ships (the 054a) plus 6 older ships with shtil system, still partially capable of protecting the fleet. And a carrier, with its air defense capabilities. Having a class without area defense qualities would not be unheard of in such circumstances. royal navy has just that with its type 23, and it will continue with that practice with type 26.

I doubt the 054 hull could fit more than two CCL modules in that front space, so the only way you are going to see that type of VLS on the 054 series is if they develop a MR SAM that has similar range to the HQ-16 and can be quad-packed. Otherwise it will be too great a loss of cell numbers. I can envision a 54B with 16 cells, 8 of which are used for 32 MR SAM's, and the remaining 8 are used for either LR SAM's or VLA's, depending on the mission.

IMO there is no problem at all with the 054's beam in terms of being able to handle two hangars. In fact this ship has enough beam to have two outside passageways, two hangars, and a middle section for another passageway with a control room on top of that. Though it would possibly need to be stretched lengthwise several meters backwards because of the dinghy rooms, or those rooms need to just be moved forward.

That is exactly what I have been thinking for years.

My wild ass guess is that it'll have 16 cells up front and 16 cells in the middle just like the 052D, all 9m full length cells to provide the most mission flexibility, and a hangar capable of storing two helicopters, probably lowered (incompatible with Ka28) to offset the higher center of gravity.

Re: China has sent 2 x 054A to the Diaoyu island, according to the Japanese Fuji TV

Fuji reported that two Chinese frigates were found 80 knots to the northwest of Diaoyu. if japanese navy attempts to intercede, then we'll see real things happening.

I'm asking mods to unlock the "Sino-Japanese Naval War, 2012" thread, thx.

Chill, man, shots not fired yet, besides the news has yet be confirmed by 3rd party sources.
