Re: China has sent 2 x 054A to the Diaoyu island, according to the Japanese Fuji TV

Fuji reported that two Chinese frigates were found 80 knots to the northwest of Diaoyu. if japanese navy attempts to intercede, then we'll see real things happening.

I'm asking mods to unlock the "Sino-Japanese Naval War, 2012" thread, thx.
If the Japanese think things are getting serious, they will announce an exclusion zone around the islands to go into effect at such and such a time and send some of their own military vessels into the area to enforce it.

Until something like that happens...short of a tragic mistake or error...it is all just posturing.

But that would be a huge step by the Japanese and they would not do so based on two FFGs 80 nautical miles (150km) off the islands. They would have to feel that the PLAN vessels either already had, or were about to, violate the 12 mile limit or something like that.

The JMSDF probably have some of their own vessels that close by now too...and subs for sure.

At the moment I'd bet both sides have subs just out of the islands limits in case something happens.

It's not often I agree with US statements on these regional disputes involving china, but I think the hope for cooler heads to prevail can not be more accurate at the moment.

Even a limited naval skirmish could dramatically change the game for everyone in the region.

I don't think it equates to a war declaration but the Japanese subsequent action in the event of more chinese ships going to diaoyu islands may be one. Like actually engaging the PLAN. But I doubt both sides go that far. Will the plaaf also get involved?

would it be safe to assume that the engine and transmission deck is confined to the most bottom or at worst top two bottom decks? Meaning that one could rearrange the rooms on top of the engine decks for a hypothetical 054b?

with further automatization and perhaps removal of a dozen or so sailors - as well as removal of the second mast, rearanging the decks near and above the engine room could allow for the exhaust/intake stack to be moved a bit forward, so it begins where the radar mast was. then, with added deck space and space from rearanging the living/working quarters, one could fit at least another 8-cell new vls system in the back, before the hangar. with two in the front, that would give 24 cells, on top of the ashms that could remain between comm bridge and smokestack.

second radar mast carries precision radar used for targeting the incoming objects that breach the horizon. but if we dispense with the need for area AAW, a new radar may be placed on the main mast, which would be a compromise between volume search and early warning of current sea eagle radar and precision and high scanning rate of current secondary mast radar.

or if one is really bent on keeping area aaw capability, perhaps a new main mast could be devised - with x band targeting faces on the mid mast and s band search radar on top. but that may prove to be too top heavy. not having area aaw capability doesnt seem as a dealbraker anyway, if one has plenty of other ships to do that job in the fleet.

am not sure about fitting 9 meter long modules in hypothetical 054b, though... 7 meter ones should be okay, though. they cant be much longer than current vls for cy-x and hq16.

That's certainly where the larger frigate nowadays are moving toward. I can certainly see that with 054B, although the question of requirement comes in. Do they need something like with 052C/D already in service.

Another 054a ship joining NSF. I see the pennant number are still painted the old style though.

Yes 547 is going to NSF

Followed by still to come

574 going to SSF
550 going to NSF
575 going to SSF
531 going to ESF
532 going to ESF

Total 18 x Type 054A and 2 x Type 054 giving 5 flotillas, 2 to SSF, 2 to ESF and 1 to NSF

if China plans 3 x frigate flotillas for each fleet this means they would need another 16 x Type 054B frigates, don’t know how likely that is though
