531 and 532 very doubtful. By all appearances, there will be only 16 054A.

But look forward to at least 8 054B...

I guess 8 x Type 054B is assuming they retire the 2 x Type 054, 525 and 526?

If 531 and 532 are Type 054B and 2 Type 054 are replaced then that leaves one full flotilla of 4 Type 054B, which kind of makes sense

Yes 547 is going to NSF

Total 18 x Type 054A and 2 x Type 054 giving 5 flotillas, 2 to SSF, 2 to ESF and 1 to NSF

if China plans 3 x frigate flotillas for each fleet this means they would need another 16 x Type 054B frigates, don’t know how likely that is though

Some are syaing that 531 and 532 are definite new, 054B vessels. Has their been any confirmation of that? Any official announcement or pictures from the yards verifying any significant difference?

Until I see or read something official, or something from the yards...I am continuing to believe 531 and 532 are Type 054As, but am more than happy to change that thinking if I can see something that difinitively points to a new 054B at this point.

Any pics or links from anyone regarding this? Please post here as soon as we know one way or the other.

We've seen the 8th 054A hull in HD shipyard. I haven't seen any new 054A hull from HP shipyard. It seems like at least this batch is stopping at 16. I'd imagine once they stop 054A production, they will wait for a couple of years at least before the follow on variant comes along. If they are using the new VLS on 052D as some have advocated, that would be a huge change to the entire combat system. They would wait at least until VLS and associated combat system matures a little bit.

They will not be retiring the two 054’s, but with 16 054A and 8 054B they can form six squadrons of four AAW frigates, one each for PLAN’s six destroyer flotillas. We have discussed this before, I think.

I expect that the two 054’s, together with the 053H3’s, will go to some of PLAN’s second-line frigate squadrons (based at Shanghai-Wusong, Ningde, Shantou, Zhanjiang and Yulin). But they might also sell of the 054’s to e.g. Bangladesh.

It is quite possible that 531 and 532 will be Type 054B. We knew 172 and 173 as 052C long before it turned they will be 052D.

Yes I think that makes sense

After all Type 052D did appear very fast with new VLS so it's not out of the question that Type 054B can appear with new VLS, we are seeing lots of Type 052D which suggests that they are not making anymore "experimental type" ships first which can be translated to Type 054A>Type 054B

Imagine the Type 054B appears before this year is out what a year it's been for Chinese navy so much activity and so many expectations came true

Would be interesting to see who China exports the Type 054 too, I mean they are modern frigates for any Navy in Asia and would be a great addition to Bangladesh Navy or Sri Lanka

I don't think Pakistan would be interested because it would require extensive modifications to fit doctrine of Pakistan Navy, it is much easier to just design a new one based on needs, plus things like translating all the systems to English etc would be too much hassle

Azmat class FAC are ultra modern ships with Western standard systems and sub systems, with sailors experience coming back very positive in comfort and automation

2-4 new class of FFG for Pakistan Navy would be more like it, better than Type 054 but not as advanced as Type 054A
