the numbers for the Type 054A will be interesting, if they dont plan a Type 054B then it makes sense to extend Type 054A run, from not only 16 units but even maybe 24 units then switch to the newer design frigate called Type 059, but if they stop at 16 then is it worth designing a upgrade for only 8 units for just a few years? maybe not since Type 054A has worked so well for PLAN why change

extending the production run for Type 054A would make more economical sense

Excuse my ignorance, this is the first time I heard of new future China navy frigate Type 059. Is there any CG or artist's illustration? Or any speculated info?

What is the main purpose for this ship? Anti ship? Anti air? Anti sub? Or a mix of all, but won't be specialized in any field?

Also what is the range of HHQ-16? Is it the standard max 35KM range as Buk? Or has the range been increased? And what is the range for this to engage income missiles?

I would say this is an AAW>>ASW>ASuW frigate. With 32 air defense missiles, the bulk of the ship's armament will be AAW-related, and so I would call this a mainly air defense frigate. It is also (somewhat less) useful in ASW with its helo and TAS, and a minimal ASuW capability exists with its 2 quadruple YJ-83 launchers. However, we don't know that those VLS modules all contain HHQ-16. If some of them contain a VLA-type missile, all bets are off.

Yes I noticed, lots of VLS cells, but the range of the SAM is way too short to engage aircraft, that means I guess this ship will serves as point defense umbrella against incoming missiles or something. Hope it have decent anti sub sonar at least.

what part of pic proves that is 054a? Sure, components look like 054a, but it could easely be something else. Is there a part i am missing that removes any doubt about it being 054a?

Also, 17th 054a or 17th 054 overall (including the first two non-a models?)

35km range is the original USSR like over 30 yrs ago, HQ-16A is much improved version, joint developed by China and Russia. It's range is 60-70km
