what part of pic proves that is 054a? Sure, components look like 054a, but it could easely be something else. Is there a part i am missing that removes any doubt about it being 054a?

Also, 17th 054a or 17th 054 overall (including the first two non-a models?)

I believe 17th 054 overall (including 054 & 054A), if this PIC is what refer too.

Is there a source for this 60-70km range?
It doesn't really matter whether the range of the HHQ-16 is 35km or 70km. It's still a medium range missile, and 054A is still a fleet air defense ship. "Point defense" and "umbrella" do not go together in the same sentence. Point defense refers to short range guns or missiles with ranges around 5-15km. Medium range missiles are capable of providing fleet defense for other ships. If your criteria for a fleet defense missile consists of "being able to attack aircraft", I don't see how the HHQ-16 wouldn't fit the bill. If your criteria consists of "being able to attack aircraft before they launch their antiship missiles", then I don't see how even the SM-2 would be able to fit the bill, yet who would doubt that the SM-2 is a fleet defense missile? Medium range air defense is simply another layer in the air defense onion, which in the PLAN will be provided (at least for now) by the HHQ-16, and in the USN by the ESSM.

People at XF who took the photos have watched so many 054A constructions that the hull shape and the cross section suggest it's 054A #17.

Type 054As: (in order of pennant number)
01 - FFG 529 Zhoushan,2006-1221, HD
02 - FFG 530 Xuzhou, 2006-0930, HP
03 - FFG 531 Unnamed, 2012-0512 HP
04 - FFG 532 Unnamed, 2012-nnnn HP

06 - FFG 546 Yancheng, 2011-0428, HP
07 - FFG 547 Linyi, 2011-1210, HD
08 - FFG 548 Yiyang, 2009-1115, HD
09 - FFG 549 Changzhou,2010-0520, HP
10 - FFG 550 Siping, 2011-0528, HD

14 - FFG 571 Yuncheng, 2009-0208, HD
15 - FFG 572 Yueyang, 2011-1214 HP

So, as of December last year, there were 15 Type 054As already launched. with the two original Type 054s, that makes seventeen.

Since that time another has already been launched I believe which was number 16, which would make this one...which will probably be launched late this year or early next, number 17 Type 054A:

16 - FFG 573 Shaoyang, 2012-nnn HD (Already launched I believe)
17 - FFG 574 Liuzhou, 2013-nnnn HD (The one we see in the pic)
18 - FFG 575 Qinzhou, 2013-nnnn HP

Hope that helps.

So that stands altogether 20 (054 & 054A).

Yes, once the eighteen Type 054As are completed, when you add the two 054s, you have 20.

That is presuming of course that the PLAN stops at 18 Type 054As. We'll know soon enough. Any way you look at it, producing the 18 Type 054As in so short a time frame is a significant accomplishment.

I'm lost in the numbers.
There are now 10 Type 054A's in active service in the PLAN, then there are 4 Type 054A's that are launched and are under varius stages of fitting out at HD. Then there are another 3 or 4 type 054A's that are in the dry docks or about to be laid down. Right ?

Ohh, try and get some shots of the 056 if you can, especially the stern with the open rear deck.

The only picture I have seen with a good angle into the open rear deck had that part blurred out. It would be interesting to see what is there.

Although don't do anything silly trying to get those shots. Wouldn't want you drinking too much tea now. ;)
