I think you totally missed the fact that the surprise was more about the size and less about the actual identity. And based on the photo 1/3 of a 054 is quite optimistic.

According to 'Janes International' PLAN have so far launched 2 056 vessels, is that correct with what members know here? Thanks
Is 572 still at the berth ? When will that ship ever get commissioned ?

056 is interesting in certain way to human eyes perception.
First, disregard the size, just look at the overall physical design and configuration which is similar to frigates and destroyers. Our brains tell us that the ship must be quite sizable because it has forward 76mm gun, an aft radar tower, AA missile launcher and helicopter deck. In reality it is just a 1,300 ton vessel.
Then after having seen a human on deck, then it will hit you on the fact that everything is "down-size", the aft radar tower is not as tall as the first impression, and the helicopter hangars are just big enough for UAV.
Finally when parked in perpendicular to 054A, it looked so small. Why? Simply because its superstruture is simply so low compare with other ships of same class, let alone comparing with superstruture of 054A. And you can not visually compare length of two objects when they are placed in perpendicular to each other.

No I didn't miss it that's why I mentioned the displacement difference between 056 and 054, to me the size look about right, I don't see the surprise here. I mean we have been watching this for like six months now and for the past few month seeing it right next to a 054, the size of it shouldn't come at a surprise.
