The ergonomics and layout of the CIC also doesn't seem to be as good as its western counterpart.[/QUOTE]

Well for me it isn't just the ergonomics, they should make a careful study of the the layout of the Ticonderoga class CGs and Arleigh Burke class DDGs when it comes to designing the CIC.

One of the two type 054, 525 under refit.
Not that the HQ-7 was removed.

Maybe it has something to do with this model:

Yes but the 64 dollar question is what will be replacing it?

Remember the older Luhu's refit?

We all speculated whether there would be a significant upgrade of their SAMs and probably were all badly disappointed.

But I am itching with curiosity as to whether a the newer HHQ-16 system can be installed on these earlier vessels - it would mean a great increase in air defence capability.

Still they haven't removed the older air-search radar and replaced it with the Top Plate.

I can't make out whether the AK-630 CIWS is still mounted... perhaps they will upgrade that too.

The 100 mm gun system is still very much intact.

If the SAM system can be upgraded then the PLAN will have gotten 2 054A's on the cheap.

I absolutely concur. I have read rumors that navies of foreign countries have raised similar concerns about China's CIC, namely being too small. I think the problem might be that CIC on China's ship is designed by the shipyard rather than the military.

If to consider the "ocean-going certified" surface combatants the PLAN have, you can omit anything before the 052s DDG and 054s FFG, from that numbers to deduce those needed for the fleet's original duties, there's even less active ships available for the expedition.

Indeed, the PLAN's expedition is stretching their small fleet of AO ships to their limit. In essence, the hull lifespan of those AO ships are burning out at a faster rate than their original design specification; however, all the hulls known to be in construction are warships from corvettes to LPDs, but no AO ships.

Now, the availability of AO ships is critical if to organize any battlegroup, the shortage of AO ships and no new designs slated for construction means the PLAN is still envisioning fights within the 1st island chain, where the lack of AO ships isn't that big of a penalty here.

So, when we see there's new AO ship hulls (at least 3 to 5, to replace the current ones and to expand) at shipyard in Shanghai or Dalian, then it'd be safe to estimate PLAN's first bona-fide carrier battlegroup should be a year or two away.

Well, rumors said that China will build new replenishment ships. To this date however, there doesn't seem to be any construction of such a ship taken place.
