Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

A nice pic of a CIC that I haven't seen before from last year's joint sea 2013 exercise, supposedly.

Not sure if it's from an 052B/C or one of the 054As or 051Cs, but decided it would be best to post it here.

Just to show that the PLAN do indeed reduce ambient light like other navies, and that the pics and videos of lit up CICs is probably for the news crews and photographers.

A few nice shots comparing the 346 and 346A on 052C and D, a shot of D's aft (dat VDS door), and a nice shot of D's main gun.

Interesting comparison.

The pic you posted is the CIC of a modern PLAN vessel.

Here's one of a US Burke DDG:

Interesting, it seems that these types of operational photos have become more common in the past five years or so.

Heh, well we had some nice pics of CICs a few years back before that as well -- I'd say the ratio of various "types" of photos hasn't changed, but the overall quantity of PLA photos have increased.

Always interesting to see the first photos of old PLAN CICs on destroyers built in the 80s and 90s to ones built in the mid 2000s onwards.
Older ones really do look their age even with refurbishment, while newer 051Cs, 052B/Cs and 054/As are definitely more in line with more modern ships like refurbished aegis ships.

Looking at photos of 056s small CIC, we also see a new generation of common console which is probably present on 052D too. Big question is what 055's set up will be. I'm hoping for a more COTS set up with a more futuristic starship enterprise look like on zumwalt, FREMM or type 45.

Heh, 055's CIC might look like the trading floor at PIMCO or Goldman Sachs :)

I would hope so!

See, zumwalt"s CIC. Without the screens on you'd be forgiven for mistaking this as the generic office of any kind of generic business firm.

I have quite a bit of experience working with Chinese electronics suppliers, and I must say, should the PLAN really leverage the domestic supply chain, they could really cook up something fancy.

Ambient LED lighting with hundreds of color combinations for the CIC and even individual work stations, an UHD projector wall or a wall of 110" 4k panels from BOE Display, individual workstations with three 4k displays or even a couple of curved 4k displays (all touch panels, naturally), etc.

Hiring some industrial psychologists and industrial designers to work out an ergonomic and slick looking CIC shouldn't be too difficult.

I maybe getting ahead of myself, but hey, the PLAN may surprise us yet.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I also have hopes that the CIC consoles will be more modern: electronics are constantly advancing and china is the world's factory and supplier and at the leading edge of the new tech. PLA would be silly to not leverage their COTS access.
Considering 056's consoles are already very modern them selves (modular large screens, track ball, keyboard, and dual touch screens), and the first 056 was launched in 2012, then if 055 hull 1 is launched in 2016 they would have had 4 years to either update their console standards for 055 or even longer than that, if they wanted to develop new consoles especially for 055.

CICs of past PLAN ships were all somewhat limited by hull size and overall displacement. Given 055 might displace almost half as much as an 052C/D, and considering it is stated to have a strong command role as well as emphasis on automation, combat system integration, and increasing net-centric capability, I am also cautiously optimistic we will see a CIC large enough for 055 and worthy of its class.

The only disappointment is knowing we will probably have to wait until 2020 for CCTV to do one of their 2 minute news reports of a new ship participating in an exercise to get a few seconds of a brief clip of the CIC >__<
