Re: DDG 052C Thread

The 5th and 6th ones are in the docks as well but the former won't be launched until 2012, after which the construction of the Type 052D will start.

That's a strong claim to make about the Type 052D. Lot of people thought that the Type 054A should've stopped, yet they are churning them out in the shipyards at very fast pace.

Let's forget about the older frigates and just concentrate on the Type 052C and Type 054A, we have 6+12 that's 18 deadly fighting naval vessels. Which is more then most of China's, neighbours naval inventory.

Out of curiosity, how many comparable frigates/destroyers does Japan have in its fleet?

Well Japan does have a massive naval fleet, including 10 Aegis Class destroyers and also two 15,000 ton helicopter carriers each capable to carry 12 medium lift helos in addition to around 36 frigates

so by 2015 China will have
around 8-10 Type 052C/D destroyers
18+ Type 054A/+/B frigates
3 Type 071 LPDs
possibly 1 LHD
and the Varyag

So in 2015 PLAN will probably still be smaller even than RN, much smaller than the Japanese fleet.

To answer your question: China has nothing to compare with Japan’s 6 (8 by 2017) Aegis AAW destroyers, the KONGO and ATAGO classes.

Though dedicated ASW destroyers, Japan’s 5 TAKANAMI and 9 MURASAME class destroyers are probably those most comparable to China’s new destroyers. They will number 18 by 2014, when the 4 AKIZUKI class destroyers have entered service.

The Japanes maintain a fleet of about 50 modern detroyers in total. As to ones that compare to the 052C, they maintain eight of them.

right now that consists of:

2 Akazuki Class DDGs (6,800 tons)
4 Kongo Class AEGIS DDGs (9,000 tons)
2 Atago class AEGIS DDGs (10,000 tons)

within the next 2-3 years that composition is expected to change to twelve total:

4 Akazuki Class DDGs
4 Kongo Class AEGIS DDGs
4 Atago class AEGIS DDGs

They have built two large, Hyuga class flat deck helicopter carriers as flagships and for ASW work (18,000 tons). They have proposed and budgeted for two even larger carriers which would be capable of VTOL aircraft, called the 22DDH project (28,000 tons).

Re: DDG 052C Thread

So why all the hype about China threat by the Japanese and Western media?
Why are there only HD and HP rolling major vessels out? Seriously the 052C is nowhere near Kongo and Atago's capabilities especially payload wise.
The PLA needs more advanced SSNs, SSPs and J-11s to counter the JMSD or else the PLAN would be obliterated in a matter of hours in a full-scale war.

Don't you think that's a bit of an exaggeration?

China has thousands of short-range and intermediate-range ballistic missiles to completely destroy Japanese air force and naval bases. Also, China has many diesel-electric submarines prowling in the East China Sea. China has countless anti-ship missiles to launch in waves at Japanese warships.

Finally, if all else fails, bring out the tactical thermonuclear weapons.

Anyway, the Japanese will be busy for decades to rebuild from the earthquake, tsunami, and radiation damage. They won't be bothering anyone for a long time.

If there ever was a full-scale naval war in the East China sea between Korea, Japan, the US 7th fleet and China, the intersting part would be that the war could be fought as much with ASCM-equipped bombers and land-based ASCM batteries as with actual naval vessels....AFAIK, China has a lot more resources poured into coastal batteries and ASCM technology than the other powers around the East China Sea....

China's C-801/C-802/C-803 sea-skimming anti-ship missiles (Chinese "Exocets")

It is more cost-effective to build asymmetric weapons to eliminate enemy destroyers than to build one-for-one warships. As China grows wealthier, whether China will continue with this cost-effective strategy is anybody's guess.

Anyway, I don't think the Japanese are looking forward to having hundreds of Chinese sea-skimming anti-ship missiles coming at them from all directions and simultaneous incoming Yu-6 (reverse-engineered Mark-48) heavyweight torpedoes from Chinese submarines.

In the video, the Chinese sea-skimming anti-ship C-801 missile and the equivalent French Exocet had their warheads removed for the test. They were only tested to prove their ability to hit the target.

MK-48 (or an equally-destructive Yu-6) heavyweight torpedo sinks a destroyer with a "kill" in one shot.

I realize this post is somewhat off-topic, but I intend to only do it once. :)
