Re: DDG 052C Thread

The performance requirements for the area air defense surely must be the range of HQ-9 and the compactness of HQ-16. It will need to be something completely new, approaching the performance of SM-2.

The HQ-16 isn't very compact. It's almost the size of an SM-2. A long range air defense missile with ranges like the HQ-9 or SM-2 doesn't need to be "compact" anyway. It will take up an entire VLS cell regardless. A medium range missile like the HQ-16 or ESSM would benefit much more from being compact if it means they can be duo- or quad-packed into a single cell.

Re: DDG 052C Thread

another photo showing the aftmast of the new ship. You can see that the long range search radar (Type 517) is still on this ship. Also, looks like the sensors on Type 730 have not been installed yet. Unless otherwise informed, the 100 mm is the main gun. The bow mounted sonar looks a little larger and somehow the MFR panels look larger too. It could just be the angle that they are taken from.

If DDG 052D does not have a box style VLS like HQ-16, I would consider it a failure. Rotary VLS is backward and takes up too much space.

At this stage it looks like a fairly standard repeat of the 052C class. It will be interesting to see what the next pair look like.

It shouldn't be much of an issue adding the HQ-16 box VLS to the 052C design, just a matter of bothering to do it.

(To be fair it doesn't rotate, the six tubes are actually "fixed" so it doesn't use as much power as the S-300 VLS on the 051C... Regardless it's still a waste of space.)

This ship is a 052C. Maybe 052C 'Flight II' depending on what (if anything) is new. Maybe nothing.

I doubt it's as easy as that. I'm not certain the HQ-16 VLS can handle the HQ-9, either physically or electronically. We'll just have to see. If it can't then it would be far better to design a multi-role VLS from scratch so it can accommodate strike, AAW, ASW, and anti-ship ordinance, like the Mk 41 VLS.

Unless there's a major redesign of the HQ-9 it definitely won't be able to fit in the box VLS.
But I think if they wanted to they could definitely install the 054A style VLS on 052C+, it's just that it'll be firing HQ-16 instead of HQ-9. If this 052C+ retains the circular launcher it probably just means they aren't deciding to roll out the new (I'm sure there is a newer VLS under development) one just yet and 052C and HQ-9 is sufficient for their air defense needs (parallel to Daring class, again)
