Re: DDG 052C Thread

A new photo of the first destroyer in JN shipyard. It appears that the main gun has been installed already. A lot of us were expecting a new 130 mm gun installed there. I'm not sure if that's it, but it is single barrel and does not look that different from the 100 mm on the other ships. I would say that the turret looks wider though.

Re: DDG 052C Thread

According to Huitong's site, Type 052C+ will have an enclosed mast / sensor system. Chances are it's going to be intentionally made really high like the Darling class. This would surely make it one of the stealthiest destroyers in the world. It looks like PLAN's aim is to leapfrog over Japan's Atago class and the Arleigh Burke in one fell swoop. Will it have a 100+ km range area defense missile? That's the big question. Could it even house China's own SM-3 to shoot down ballistic missiles and satellites? That would be one very important mission of the Type 052C+.

All this shipbuilding activity points at one tantalizing suggestion: PLAN is going to assemble a CVBG with the Type 052C+ destroyer, 2 Type 054A frigates, the second Type 071 LPD and a Type 095 SSN. And the rush is to finish before Chinese New Year 2011! The carrier of course will be Varyag and the carrier aircraft will be J-15 (looks like the aircraft on the Wuhan concrete carrier weren't mock ups after all.... and the recently publicized news about J-15 flying already confirms it). Could PLAN be doing its first carrier exercises with Type 052C+ in East China Sea by February 2011? Hmmm

It could have an M/EMS, I wouldn't hold my breath... And even if it did have an enclosed mast it hardly means it's leap frogging the AB/Atago classes... They will likely still have a far greater missile load.

And depending on whether the new ship uses HQ-9 or HQ-16 will see what kind of area defense it gets -- HQ-9 has a slant range of 125km (and some say 200 km, which isn't impossible; it's not a small missile...)

This ship won't be in service for at least a year, and the Varyag definitely won't be, so don't get too excited.

The performance requirements for the area air defense surely must be the range of HQ-9 and the compactness of HQ-16. It will need to be something completely new, approaching the performance of SM-2.

It would be nice if they made a missile with the compactness of HQ-16 and range of HQ-9... but just because something is required doesn't mean it is real.

None of us eve know if they're developing a new SAM for this 052C+ class.

yes, 2011, absolutely not, especially Varyag, after she launched, she needs many test for sea trial, many many test, she may come back to the ship yard to be fixed, untile she is fully qualified and satisfied, that will spent lots of time, and J-15,still test flight....

Re: DDG 052C Thread

Accepting at face value the highly interesting information reproduced by A. Man in post # 460, we will see a reasonable, but not overly ambitious building programme in 2011-2015.

Summing up, the 18 newbuilt surface combatants will be the four Type 052C+ destroyers, eight Type Type 054A (ncluding 548 commissioned on 26 October) in addition to the six in service by mid-2010, two 054B and 4 light frigates, obviously Type 056. But no mention of four Type 054A+ for Sanya.

The units to be retired are the five oldest 051 now in service, built between 1977 and 1980, and all the remaining eleven 053H (at long last), built 1975-80.

I would in fact find it very surprising if LUDA 108 was retired that early, seeing that it was upgraded to 051G1 standards during a refit about 2008, including installation of 4x4 YJ-83 and of a HHQ-7, and replacement of the the 37 mm guns by turreted ones.

It is odd that Google Translate persists in translating Lushun into Port Arthur. This name has not been in official use since the Soviet Navy handed over Lushun to PLAN in 1955.

You really have to stop dreaming so much. I get speechless with some of your theories. I really do. Sometimes, it would be good to rely on your eyes to judge how far things are proceeding. All signs point to not a lot of change in this batch of four 052c.

Re: DDG 052C Thread

^ Is it just me or does the mast look like it's really high? Sort of like HMS Darling.
