052/052B Class Destroyers

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Looks like the 24 cell version.

I would hope so. I still feel uncomfortable with a ship of this size relying only on 1x gun and 1x missile pod CIWS. I would think 2x guns for all-aspect coverage and 1x missile pod for overlap can be afforded and would be significantly more secure.

This is said to be the 130mm naval gun aboard the new 052D destroyer. The gun looks very sexy to me. Is it the first naval gun that fit with muzzle brake?

very unstealthty.

no, not those, but in the aft of the ship with the Yagi-antenna. I saw somewhere pics about a new long range radar being tested a la SMART-L.

That's L-Band radar, for VHF frequencies you still need Yagi or similar large antennas. VHF radar are know to detect stealth aircraft at longer rangers, though not very accurately. Ideally, you need both to accurately detect, track and shoot down stealth aircraft. Western Navies don't have this problem yet, so no VHF radars on western ships.

Yeah, especially when considering the AK-130-MR-184 (the gun that this one reversed engineered from) is more compact and have far less exposed mechanisms.

But what I don't understand is why having all those handle bars on the turret?

It was on the test ship, so it should probably show up in the real thing. The Type 052D and Type 055 are candidates.

Wow I did not know the Chinese had Smart L style radar under development, that's awesome news and will be a great addition to the DDG and Cruisers

And by the way I think the new 130mm looks fantastic, infact the Type 052Dbos the picture above is one of my favourite DDG it simply looks amazing, very nice style from every angle, the 130mm looks a fine addition

Then perhaps its not just a reversed engineered AK130.

If China wanted AK130s, they would have just bought them off the shelf.

If past history has shown us anything, it is that China does not just copy stuff. Chinese engineers will happily take good engineering designs and concepts from other existing designs, but they always do so to either improve on the existing design, or apply what they learnt to something new.

I'm sorry but I don't see where that's coming from, PJ-38 is far more stealthy.

By the way, PJ38 is not merely a reverse engineered AK130. I hate to quote wikipedia, but the 052D wiki entry actually has a very nice detailed section regarding the main gun, where it claims the AK130 was reverse engineered successfully years ago, but the a gene for gene clone of a cold war gun did not meet PLAN requirements, so they went back to the drawing board to improve it, and came back with PJ-38, basically a modernized AK-130 able to fire a variety of extended and guided rounds.

It's all anecdotal (unless you want to go through the sources and verify them) but let's use our critical thinking and ask if any of this sounds unreasonable, and consider if the reverse of this would be reasonable.

Seems to be a PLAN fetish of some sort. Maybe used by sailors to clean the turret?

Some where on the net there are pictures of the PJ38 with out the fiberglass gun housing on it.

easy to see its not a clone. borrowed but not cloned.

also I don't think the autoloader was included in any pictures yet.

of there is a good pictrure it would be easy to see what the rate of fire is for this gun.

My bet is this is a OtoBreda 127/54 compact not a Mk 45 if you know what i mean.
