Well, we already know that the Type 052D is going to have a FL-3000N installation aft.

These are two different configurations shown here on 892. It is interesting because the one in the second photo aft on 892, looks like the same installation as is on the Liaoning and on planned fot the Type 052D, an 18 cell launcher. Here it is on the Liaoning:

liaoning-13.jpg

But the one seen forward on the 892 is more oblong in the vertical and looks to hold more missiles.

But how many?

We cannot see from this angle, but I had heard that there was another version that could hold 22 or more missiles. The larger US RAM launchers hold 21 missiles and look similar...and they are on US Nimitz (and now Ford) Carriers, America LHAs, Wasp LHDs, and the San Antonio Class LPDs (And I believe on the Whidbey Island and Austin vessels too).

Also on the new Freedom Class LCS, while the Sea RAM with 11 missiles is on the Independence Class LCS. (I personally believe at least one 21 cell RAM should be on every Burke and Tico too).

So, why isn't the higher capacity FL-3000N launcher on the Liaoning? You'd think they would put it there.

Perhaps it was not redy at the time. Who knows?

Looks like it is 22 on that forward launcher, an additional row of four added to the bottom of the 18 cell launcher. As for Liaoning, could also be the thought that 18 is adequate given the combo with the 1030 CIWS and the carrier would have escorts.

Should be 24. there is one more at the bottom on each sides.
Thanks, donsoc. So those are missiles on the overhangs on the bottom. interesting.

24 is a very good number for such a launcher, and if were me, I'd have four of those on the Liaoning. Never can have too many self defense missiles on a carrier IMHO.

The US carriers now typically have two 21 cell RAMs, and two 8 cell ESSM launchers, for a total of 58 missiles and giving the carrier both mid range and close in anti-air missile protection for itself, in addition to its two Phalanx, and the AEGIS systems of its escorta. Just too large an investement in the crew, the ships, and all of its aircraft to not maximize its defense in every way possible.

If it were up to me, I would persoanlly have four RAMs, four ESSM launchers, and four Phalanx on every U.S. nuclear carrier...cost would be higher, but that cost difference is minute compared to the cost of a carrier, its air wing, and its crew.

151 shall commission soon. I hope it will be done in the April.

Next step will be equipping the North Sea fleet with this advance destroyer and I hope it can be done soon because the carrier needs better air defense protection.
