Considering your typical Phalanx like CIWS carries a magazine with a 1,500-3,000 round capacity, where are you going to get 10,000 rounds from?

I really do not get this argument you have got going, why would you want to essentially spray and pray when you can aim and get a far better chance of a hit?

Modern CIWS guns are most likely linked to remote weapon systems that allow manual operation. In 2001 when the Japanese CG faced off against an armed North Korean ship, the Japanese Tsurugi-class patrol vessel (220 ton) was equipped with 20mm JM61 (M61 Vulcan), same gun used in Phalanx CIWS system. The engagement video (from Japanese perspective) can be viewed here:



However, it should be noted that CIWS guns are designed for close range defense, so the effective range vs. boats are limited. We should not assume that the attacking boats are suicide bomb-laden boats or guys armed with AK-47's. It's quite possible for boats to carry light anti-ship missiles or even MANPADS and ATGM's. The Swedes had installed Hellfires on CB90's for trial:

no doubt a massive expansion is under way with PLAN when Type 055 comes around

the thing is, ships like Type 056 and lots of them add "critical mass" to PLAN, and critical mass is very important for a blue water navy

eventaully there might come a day when each Chinese fleet has 2 aircraft carriers, say one conventional and one nuclear powered per fleet, so 3 conventional carriers say 65,000 tons and 3 supercarriers say 100,000 tons and Liaoning is used purely as a training carrier, so really 7 in total, so really meaning at any one time each fleet can send out a carrier

add to each fleet 4 Corvettes Flotillas (4 x 4 =16) 3 FFG Flotillas (3 x 4 =12), 2 DDG Flotillas (2 x 4=8), 1 CG Flotilla ( 4 x Type 055) and 1 Amphibous Flotilla (made up of 3 x LPD + 1 x LHD) and 1 CV and 1 CVN

that means each fleet has

16 Corvettes (Type 056A/B)
12 FFG Type 054/054A/054B
8 DDG Type 052C/D
4 CG Type 055/055A
3 x Type 071 LPD and 1 x Type 085 LHD
1 x CV
1 x CVN

Times the whole lot by 3 and you have

48 corvettes
36 FFGs
24 DDG
12 CGs
9 LPD + 3 LHD
3 CVs and 3 CVNs

~140 surface combatant’s and we haven’t included submarines, replenishment’s, salvage, recuse, surveillance, etc etc which could bring the fleet to above 200 ships

That’s about 2/3 of USN

I'e read this too............and am looking forward to seeing how the type 055 destroyer turns out.

btw: this French chap 'Henri K' who i believe lives in Corsica seems to know a lot about PLAN developments, and he apparently has a lot of respect from military watchers, as his predictions are usually pretty accurate by all accounts.

Is this the same "Henri K" that posts in MPnet´s PLA photos thread? that user posts a lot of PLA stuff, even stuff that doesnt get posted here in this fórum.
