re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer
I didn't know CIWS needs to be calibrated? As long as thousands of round is able to fire out, accuracy is almost non existent since CIWS just need to make a spread wall of rounds on its intended target...
Actually, not at all. They have to fire in a very straight line, based on very minute controls from their controller, in order to be able to hit an incoming cruise missile, either sub-sonic or supersonic.
These are very sophisticated and complex HTK (Hit to kill) algorythms. Hitting a speeding bullet with another speeding bullet...even when firing thousands. You have to put out as dense a stream of outgoing projectiles as possible, and then bring that stream into contact with the incoming missile.
Spray and pray will not work...the chances of hitting such a missile would be like that of finding a tiny needle in a 30 ton hay stack. But the Phalanx and Goal Keeper have been live fire tested many, many times (as I am sure the PLAN versions have been), utlilizng these algorythms and are continuously updated and improved, and when properly calibrated, have a very decent chance of hitting such a missile in terminal flight.
