I love seeing a CIWS in action. Two at the same time is even better. Please post more if you have them!

I always wonder if those CIWS have "surface target mode" to engage thin-skinned small vessels, with that kind of firing rate small boats that usually used by pirates and suicide boats will be torn to shreds in seconds.

Easily done by switching to manual but it's not practical it's expensive and a over kill, which is why smaller calibre guns do the job or sometimes much larger calibre which pack much greater punch on single shots

Usually it takes a few shots to calibrate the guns, imagine trying to first calibrate a CIWS, the magazine is finite and would be a extreme waste of resources

I didn't know CIWS needs to be calibrated? As long as thousands of round is able to fire out, accuracy is almost non existent since CIWS just need to make a spread wall of rounds on its intended target...

It was for a general CIWS which in manual, modern systems like the Block 1B have Phalanx Surface Mode (PSUM) with a side mounted FLIR which is used to engage anything other than a anti ship missile

In the light of new threats modern CIWS do have a surface attack mode

Actually, not at all. They have to fire in a very straight line, based on very minute controls from their controller, in order to be able to hit an incoming cruise missile, either sub-sonic or supersonic.

These are very sophisticated and complex HTK (Hit to kill) algorythms. Hitting a speeding bullet with another speeding bullet...even when firing thousands. You have to put out as dense a stream of outgoing projectiles as possible, and then bring that stream into contact with the incoming missile.

Spray and pray will not work...the chances of hitting such a missile would be like that of finding a tiny needle in a 30 ton hay stack. But the Phalanx and Goal Keeper have been live fire tested many, many times (as I am sure the PLAN versions have been), utlilizng these algorythms and are continuously updated and improved, and when properly calibrated, have a very decent chance of hitting such a missile in terminal flight.

You mean luck to miss the 10000 rounds going at a diameter of 50m and not to get hit by a single round? Lolz

I would guess that the computer would need to calculate the flight path, aim and direct the fire at the front of the missile and maintain firing for a few seconds, rather than aim at the missile itself.

assume 50m box
10000/50^2=200bullet/m^2 10000/3*3200rd/min=1.1min assume there are 3 weapon fire simultaneouslly toward the missile 200/66s=3bullet/m^2/s does that sound alot to you? now this is just surface area, when put volume there, said 50*50*2m deep, then the ammount of bullet occupied in that volume/s is even less. say each bullet size is about size of your tumb, then thats 3 thumb size occpy 1m^2/s or 2m^3/s=2M cm^3/s bullet is about what 2cm^3 size so thats 1/1million ratio, so you need 1million bullet/2m^3/s to occupy entire 50*50*2 space. of course the missile occupy about 1m*1m*8m range? suffice to say 10000/50m*50m*2/1.1min is not enough.
