The 052D schematic can't be right. The rear VLS modules can't penetrate 4 full decks because the 4th deck is the engine room.
It seems to me that below the VLS modules is not the engine room / one of the engine rooms (?) but just the propellor shafts.

That drawing was made in order to accommodate a 4-deck high VLS which is unnecessary. The position of the GT and diesel engines would also be a little higher than the very bottom of the ship because the very bottom has spaces for bunker fuel. This would also mean that the props should be entering the ship at a higher angle than what is depicted, and would be blocked by the bottom of the rear VLS modules. Those modules should actually be terminating at the waterline (red line) or just below it, not an entire deck below it.

The positioning of the FL3000 launcher is also wrong. On the 052D, the FL3000 is at the front of the hanger, not the rear as was the case with the 052C's Type 730, this arrangement should allow more than enough space for an automated reloader to be installed at the front of the hanger without adversely affecting the hanger's normal operations.

Really hope top see more pictures of the Type 052D soon...particularly more showing the entiore vessel and closer up photos of the after portions of the ship.

I'd like to verufy once and for all that there is an HQ-10 launcher aft.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I found a R&D doc (dated back to february 1994 from 724th institute) talking about Ship-based Multifunction PAR and MMIC T/R Modules. The researchers advocated the choice of S-band, saying one face with 3000 T/R modules (average power of 10W for each one) could detect a target with a RCS of 0.008m² 147km away. They also advised to initiate studies and the development of solid state and GaAs T/R modules.
I think that 14th Institute followed these recommendations in the development of the H/LJG-346 (052C radar).
