re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

We haven’t heard much about 051Cs lately nor even seen any PICs. They are still potent & capable ships though.

Can anyone post some PICs & where these babies are sitting at current....

Type 051C 115 and 116 are both with North Sea Fleet's 1 Destroyer Flotilla Qingdao-Jiaonan.

116 is currently exercising in the West Pacific, crossing the Ryukyu Chain 4 October in company with 112 Type 052, 546 Type 054A, 528 Type 053H3, 881 Type 905, 864 Type 926, and 861 Type 925 - all being NSF ships.

Franco-Russe, do you the think North Sea Fleet will eventually get 4 of the Type 054B FFGs

Also NSF will be in line for receiving 4 x Type 052D DDGs (117-120) after 172 and 173 go to SSF

It seems to me that North Sea Fleet will be a very well equipped fleet in the coming years with 2 x FFG flotillas and 1 x DDG flotilla and seeing them push into the Pacific will certainly be sending the alarm bells ringing in Tokyo and Washington

Assuming there will be 8 054B, yes, I do expect that NSF will get four (replacing 053H3) and that ESF will also get four 54B (replacing 054 and 053H3). SSF will soon have eight 054A.

I think that there will also be 8 052D, and that SSF will get four, 172-175. But 117-120 to NSF, as you say.

NSF has certainly been upgraded in recent years, most significantly of course with the carrier. But it still comes third, I think, getting stuff handed down from other fleets. While ESF is building up its 039A/B submarine fleet, for instance, NSF gets the 039/039G replaced by the YUAN’s.

If you want to be alarmed, you can always find cause to be so. Japan apparently considers it an enfringement of its sovereignty every time a PLAN task force passes through the Ryukyus. I am sure Washington takes a much more detached view of that.

Why don't they start shooting then ?

Quite a rash question. If everyone decided to stand by absolutes and start shooting every time a dispute occurs, the world would cease to exist. Everyone must show some tolerance once in a while.

How do you come to 8 052Ds? SSF has 2 already 052Cs, 170 and 171, I would have thought they would get just 2 052Ds, pennant 172 and 173 to make 4 flotilla DDG (170-173), the next 4 052Ds would go to NSF (117-120) then they switched to equipping ESF with a second flotilla of DDGs, namely 154-157 adding on to the existing 4 052Cs (150-153)

So I would think that 052D production is either 6 or 10 units, considering it’s a more mature platform than 052C I would expect most likely 10 units, as 052C had 6 units, unless that is if you are thinking they will retire 170 and 171

I would also expect 167, 168 and 169 taking a backwater role, also why is there is a submarine salvage ship in that NSF escort fleet to the Pacific do they even have a submarine with them>?

OT here, since I'm seeing a pattern:

Okay ChinaGuy, I really don't know how old you are, but it seems like you are quite trigger happy. Once you get to a certain age, you will realize that war is a matter of last resort. Everyone looses when there is a war.

As for 052D, it's either going to be 4 or 8. NSF gets the last of everything. So as it stands, SSF will get the first 4 052D. At which point, it will have 2 052B, 2 052C and 4 052D. ESF will have 4 Sovs and 4 052Cs. The only fleet left with old ships will be NSF. The next batch of 052D can either just join a newly established blue water fleet or join NSF directly or join SSF (and then SSF sends old ships to NSF). Also, we don't know what's going to happen with Varyag, but my guess is that it's not going to stay in NSF.

I.a. because the interesting chart of PLAN shipbuilding 2003-2020 that A. Man posted has 8 052D.

There are in all probability submarines accompanying the NSF SAG in the Western Pacific. It seems that there always are, though they are rarely seen. But that is in the nature of submarines...
