Good find. I think.

Looks like you have a similar problem as I do. I find plenty of Chinese military pictures but they don't have captions or the caption is in broken English or Chinese.

It can go either HQ-9 for the 052C or HQ-16 for the 054A, it depends on the shape of the VLS inside. If its circular, its HQ-9, if its squared HQ-16. However, the shape is impossible to tell from this vantage point, and the VLS tubes are placed inside a squared supporting structure. My suspicion though, based on the shape of the smoke, is that its cold launched and its HQ-9.

personally i think its an HQ-9, you can see their were 2 stages of combustion. first stage was the combustion of forcing the missle out of the tube, second stage was the missle combustion itself. This is just my interpretation as you can see from the smoke their was 2 actions were one its at the tube base, and the other several meters above the platform from the previous one.

Another thought was that the Type054A is in production with most of its equipment sorted out and matured for operation. While the Type052C is still in sea trials and are not in production yet, so hence the land trials of the HQ-9. Though with that said PLA has had years of operation with the HQ-9 already. A further refined HQ-9 maybe??

OR (providing this is the pic of hq9 in the first place) its just an old pic. Who knows when and where was this taken, could be years old.

It's Phase array radar is more powerful than the 054A's top-plate radar.
But PLAN only has 2 of thos 052C. I think it's due to cost. The MMIC for phase array radar costs too much. It's cheaper to build those top-plate.

China semiconductor has to bring the cost of the MMIC down whether it's for the ship or for AESA. There's no way around it.

right now, this ship by far is drawing the most attention from the USN and Japanese Navy. They are really curious as how does this compare to the Aegis system.

The fact that China has only commissioned two 052Cs has nothing to do with cost. They launched only two 052Bs and 051s too. It's rather because they need only two to test the design while they progress to a more modern version which in the end will be built in greater numbers once they settle with a design.

Well just saw the CCTV news. It says 169 is only little over 5000ton fully loaded. And 171 is just under 6000ton. So I guess most of us are right about the difference between the two ships. But both of them are about 1000ton smaller than what I thought.

considering that 052B was said to be 5850 ton fully loaded before, now it's said to be 5500 in displacement, seems like this is standard displacement or at least displacement for the current mission. Same with 171, it's said to be 5909, but that should be displacement for this mission. 887 was said to be 20000, and we know it's max displacement is larger than that.

They already working on number 3rd and 4th for 054A. clearly top-plate is much cheaper than PAR.
