re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

They will only shown them to bridge And galley plus some not so important area. Nothing extraordinary things will be known to them.

CIC room is straightly out of bound....

If go by past experience (I was there when an earlier expedition made a port call to HK), it'll most like to begin from the aft heli deck (perhaps with a Ka-28 in the open), walk through the superstructure on the same deck level, onto the front deck with the main gun and forward VLS units, then back onto shore from there.

Interior is strictly no phototaking...hopefully this time round they'd allow phototaking of the personnel weaponry, interested if there's any improvement since the last one in Dec '09.

Still, this is most possibly the first time ever for prime phototaking opportunity of the HHQ-9 VLS and the APAR radar slabs...close and crisp photos, that'll be a far cry from whatever they could take in Shanghai. And in 12.6 MP detail (alas from an Olympus EPL-1), 14-42mm and 40mm-150mm covered, that's gonna rock.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Just read the news this morning that the 052C DDG 171 Haikou & 054A FFG 571 Yuncheng are going to make a stopover at Hong Kong between 30/4 to 4/5. There will be open house but details are pending on later release.

If I'm not mistaken, this is going to be the first time ever that a 052C DDG shown open to public...

EDIT: Yay, just found the HKSAR gov't press release, in English too...

Wow...wish I could be there and somehow get a tour...but I see it is only for HK residence with a valid HK ID.

Oh well, hopefully we will get some great photos from it regarding the Type 052C.

Yeah this is a great photo opportunity, last time when 054A was there it's the first time we got a photo collection of its weapons designation tags. I believe during a previous visit they let people onto the 167 bridge.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

China has acquired DN80/GT25000 manufacturing techniques and it's generally believed that follow on 052C ships are powered by the domestically produced GT25000s. The problem with the engine is that they are more powerful than LM2500, so install two is inadequate, but in stall four would be overkill. Hence China's push to get the indigenous QC185 (LM2500 class) gas turbine certified for naval use, there were reports in 2010 that the engine is already in use but it made no sense.

According to this article, QC185 doesnt have enough power to get type 052C going, so they have to keep relying on QC280 (copy of GT25000) to propel the destroyers.

I wonder if china will be able to get a domestic engine for type 052D. If this article is true, i doubt. Perhabs the lack of a suitable engine is a considerable bottleneck for PLAN.

I think that is competely false, looking at the ships under construction and ones already constructed and the ones they have planned does it really look like China has a engine problem? obviously they solved the engine problem thats why we are seeing ship and ship leaving Chinese shipyards

if China can run Varyag, a aircraft caarrier then they sure can run any frigate or destroyer or any other surface vessal for that matter

Yup! That globalsecurity has not update for long... It probably make those comment when only 2 Type052C commission. Now we are seeing another 6 commission..

Yes, they solved the engine problem. Importing foreign engines was the solution. In adition to type 052C using ukrainian and german designed engines, both Type 054A and type 071 use SEMT Pielstick engines (France). As for varyag, looking at the engine smoke that comes from the ship (similar to the smoke coming from its sister ship, the kuznetzov), i smell russian/ukrainian propulsion in the air. Im sure that things will get better in the future, but right now AFAIK no chinese designed engine propels any major PLAN ship. I think that china started very late development in this field (even more than aircraft engines)

Actually, that page was updated last year. Besides, the construction of more type 052C doesnt invalidate its information.
