re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Hi

I'am new on this site but have been reading the threads on the PLAN naval construction for sometime here.

Is there really a type 052D in the design stage, and if so, who has officially stated so?

Thanks

i believe it is passed the design stage and will borrow and build on from currently Type 052C

currently China will have 8 Type 052C destroyers, 2 in service ( pennant 170,171) and 6 due to join before 2016 (150-153 and 172-173)

a second batch of 8 Type 052Ds (117-120, 154-157) are expected to start construction in and around 2013-2014, so we expect to see the new model soon maybe even towards the end of this year

Why the second batch of 052C++ named 150-153 and 172-173, why not just 172-177 ? ... must be an explanation, a bit odd really.

A perfectly simple and straightforward explanation:

150-153 are for the East Sea Fleet
172 and 173 are for the South Sea Fleet (like 170 and 171)

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

While we're on the subject of moving away from A vs B (which I sort of propagated heh), I'd like to raise my own question which hopefully won't detract from plawolf's own.

What's the full displacement of 052C? Wikipedia lists it as 7000 tons (we all know how reliable wiki is). I ask because the orbat list A man posted a few weeks back listed 052D as meant to displace 6800 tons, which would be barely an improvement, if any, over 052C. I think the consensus was that it's somewhere between 6k and 7k, but does anyone have a number from an authoritative source, like a (chinese) news report or one of the military/naval magazines they have over there? Or maybe the 6800 number was meant as standard displacement rather than full (which would then have repercussions for what the 5200 ton frigate and 9900 ton cruiser actually weigh).

Thanks. ^^

This is probably as official and as vague as possible.

It's from the equipment department head of a certain PLAN destroyer flotilla.
Both Wuhan and Haikou are quote to be 155.5m long, a beam of 17.2m, and full displacement "over 5,000t."

However the MOD press release of the sixth anti piracy task force changed it's full displacement to be "over 7,000t."

Much thanks (again lol)

Personally I feel the "over 7000t" number to be more realistic for a ship the 052C's size, and especially looking at the way it is armed (48 large SAMs with eight AShMs the size of anti ship tomahawks).
With that info then, I'm going to interpret the "6800 t" displacement for 052D from the "new vessel" projection, as standard displacement rather than full, which if applied to the rest of the chart, will have interesting implications for the new cruiser and frigate's respective weights and the fleet composition PLAN are going for in the next coming decade...

My question is that since 052B/C share basically the same dimensions, and there isn't much visible difference in draft, how could 052C's displacement be over 1,000t more?

I think 052C should displace a little more, but not 1000. I do question those numbers of 052B. The displacement we get from Sov class is much higher (close to 8000 ton for full load) even though the length, beam and draft are pretty close to each other.
