re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer
What are the main differences/improvements between the 1st (2 ships) and the 2nd (6 ships) batches ?
Would PLAN upgrade the first 2 ships to the current standard (052C ++) ?, remember it was like 8-9 years ago now :-(
There does not appear to be much in the way of external changes. But there is likely to be significant improvements made internally, especially in the battle management and electronics departments.
The original 052C was a quantum leap for the PLAN in comparison to what they were operating before, and there are bound to be many areas in need of improvement and refinement, and those lessons were likely to have been distilled and applied to modifying the new 052Cs.
It took the PLAN a long time to get to know and used to the complexity of the 052C, and probably longer to iron out all the bugs and issues, which partially explains the long wait until this new wave of construction.
The other main issue I would imagine would be the price. Remember that the T/R elements of AESA radars were extremely expensive back in the day when the 052C first came out, so those 4 massive arrays must have cost a significant amount of money.
However, as production technology improved and production volume went up, the price of T/R models would have fallen exponentially. I would not be surprised if the new batch of 4 052Cs cost about as much now as the two originals did when they first came out.
