@ MwRYum, I'm replying in the PLAN carrier thread, as discussion would be quite OT in the 052 thread.

From A Man's photo, it looks like the two hulls are indeed going to be identical. So it will be a total of 2+6 052C before moving to 052D, rather than 2+4 052C.
Eight is a very good number. A minimum number I would think if the PLAN wants these capable DDGs available for as many roles as they would be able to plan for them, from main duties escorting carriers or Phibrons, to the center piece of a strong SAG or other groups.

It will be interesting to see what they follow it up with, but as they build more of the capital ships (carriers, LPDs, and eventually potential LPHs) they will need more destroyers.

Do we know for sure that 052D will be built there?
If so, do we know for sure they would start building it right away? what if there is a one year hiatus while they get used to a new design?
How do we know it is going to be a further development of 052 hull with the given powerplant? how do we know it is not going to be a whole new design - new hull and new powerplant? say 055 class or whatever we're gonna call it.

i guess we will start seeing pics of he Type 052D next year

What are the main differences/improvements between the 1st (2 ships) and the 2nd (6 ships) batches ?

Would PLAN upgrade the first 2 ships to the current standard (052C ++) ?, remember it was like 8-9 years ago now :-(

There does not appear to be much in the way of external changes. But there is likely to be significant improvements made internally, especially in the battle management and electronics departments.

The original 052C was a quantum leap for the PLAN in comparison to what they were operating before, and there are bound to be many areas in need of improvement and refinement, and those lessons were likely to have been distilled and applied to modifying the new 052Cs.

It took the PLAN a long time to get to know and used to the complexity of the 052C, and probably longer to iron out all the bugs and issues, which partially explains the long wait until this new wave of construction.

The other main issue I would imagine would be the price. Remember that the T/R elements of AESA radars were extremely expensive back in the day when the 052C first came out, so those 4 massive arrays must have cost a significant amount of money.

However, as production technology improved and production volume went up, the price of T/R models would have fallen exponentially. I would not be surprised if the new batch of 4 052Cs cost about as much now as the two originals did when they first came out.

Hi i'am Franklin this is my first time posting here.

I like to know if anyone knows about the engines of the new Type 052C's. That is the DN80 gas-turbines engines. Are the Chinese still importing them from the Ukraine or are they building them in China itself independently or under licence ?

China has acquired DN80/GT25000 manufacturing techniques and it's generally believed that follow on 052C ships are powered by the domestically produced GT25000s. The problem with the engine is that they are more powerful than LM2500, so install two is inadequate, but in stall four would be overkill. Hence China's push to get the indigenous QC185 (LM2500 class) gas turbine certified for naval use, there were reports in 2010 that the engine is already in use but it made no sense.
