So Z-10 had a search light, awesome, that's new to me.
Now we can use it for police work. :D

I believe it is easier to take photos without white-out light beams. Is it possible or reasonable to equip such lights for crowd control?

They're just landing lights.

I'm not sure why your automatic first assumption when seeing it was thinking FLIR, TADS or other equipment was failing.

Here's AH-64 and UH-60 with similar lights... not exactly rare

1. Not all WZ-10 turning on "landing" lights in these three photos.
2. Blackhawk's landing lights pointing downward. It looks that WZ-10's lights are pointing forward.

1. Yes. So what's the most likely answer explaining that? Consider it; what's the reason for tuning on landing lights? If you're getting ready to take off or land, yes? Or if you want to illuminate something in front of you. All valid answers.
2. Yes. Z-10's landing light can point downward in default position (at the protrusion posterior to the RWR and MAWS), but can fold out forward. I.e.: they can point down or forward. Not exactly rare. I'm not sure what the direction of landing lights has to do with anything.

Logically I just don't know how your first thought from seeing landing lights turned on is "FLIR must be broken"....

Don't know why you questioned my question? Is it necessary or helpful for discussion?

My first thought is that PLA pilots did not perform landing using FLIR or goggles. Maybe it is not required to do so for safety reason because of a photo operation. Or maybe it is too demanding for the unit. Maybe FLIR or goggles were broken.

I'm curious as to what the train of thought was, because turning on landing lights for landing/taking off is quite benign and normal, even for aircraft equipped with night vision or FLIR, especially when they're not landing or taking off from hostile territory.

Anyway, I hope my answer is satisfactory for you.

Landing lights are absolute necessity and are a standard on all helicopters like it was mentioned.

No one lands with a FLIR, all FLIR's have digital or optical zoom which makes it hard to land with them especially since you can not overlook the ground when it is zoomed in right beneath you. NVG of helmets have also a problem, they only cover a smaller field of view than the human eye and the green spectrum distorts the field of depth which makes it difficulter to land.

It obligates to the pilot if he uses NVG or Landing Light or like the rest of the pilots they see the remaining light as sufficient.
