Re: DOD Report Praises WZ10

I don't know if everyone had a chance to peruse this year's DOD report on China's military:

There's usually something interesting buried in the rhetoric. This year's report sited the WZ10 as "offering combat performance equal to the Eurocopter Tiger, but below that of the AH-64 Apache." (page 4)

Not a bad compliment, considering the source.

I think at this point, we know it at least has more power and smaller RCS than Tiger, don't know how other areas compare though.

Gee, I always thought tiger is superior than Apache. But I know little about choppers.

Hi,
Just a question from a novice. Why is it more difficult to develop a helicopter as against an aeroplane? China has been active in the latter field but ojnly just making strides in the former field. what are the technical difficulties?Help appreciated in advance.

They say a helicopter is more like a formation of parts flying compared to airplanes. Helicopters vibrate, to the point where if the helicopter is unbalanced and unadjusted, it can literally shake itself to pieces. It takes a lot of expertise and high technical capabilities to design a safe and reliable helicopter.

I would like to point out to engines as the main reason. All but the smallest helicopters today use turboshaft engines, as anything else is just not efficient enough (by today's standards) China, on the other hand, has only recently excelled with gas turbine technology, and we will probably see domestic turboshafts for helicopters and other gas turbines for ships find their way on various projects.

Another reason is in helicopter area, China is easier to get help from west. It is estimated China needs 10000+ civil helicopters while currently there're only a few hundreds. Under this name, China has joint development with Europe. Z8, Z9, Z10, Z11, Z15... all got Europe help.

more news on WZ-10, this is from Aerospace daily.

from Changhe helicopter.
Describes four major event.
First one talks about an important class (pretty clear it's talking about WZ-10) can be delivering the first batch to army aviation this year.
Second one talks about a Z-8 variant (most likely Z-8F) achieving a steady mass production level (also makes sense since we've seen recent photos of it).
Third one talks about developing a new platform and doing research for it
Fourth one talks about cooperating with internaitonal partner is moving forward, allowing military/civilian helicopter develop into a new era. (not too sure which series this is talking about)

The fourth one that they are cooperating with an international partner should be the Z-15.

I'm not sure what the third one is, though I'm guessing it's probably transport like the M-17 or the S-70 Blackhawk.

The link for Z-8a appears to be broken
