WOW! In a CCTV interview, the captain of a Type 039C conventional submarine revealed that the YJ-19 submarine-launched hypersonic missile seen in the parade actually completed its firing tests and final design certification on their sub. This implies that Yuan-class submarines are now officially capable of carrying the YJ-19.

The PLA Navy is executing a significant strategic shift from diesel-electric to all-nuclear construction, representing a fundamental departure from historical construction patterns. This transition includes development of the Type 041 Zhou-class SSN—a small-scale, low-power nuclear submarine approximately the size of conventional submarines but with greater endurance, potentially filling regional patrol and presence missions more economically than full-size SSNs and SSGNs.

It'll be interesting to see where these more compact SSN sit in relation to large scale SSNs and current SSKs with regards to cost.

If they're overly expensive it would be reasonable to just construct larger and more capable SSNs instead, but I cannot imagine that they're as low cost as current SSKs. So it will be fascinating to watch the reasoning for this move to emerge over the years. Because so far modern SSKs are perfect for the litoral operations and operations within the first island chain, which are important mission profiles for China. But I can imagine that the PLAN high command pushes for more a submarine force that is more focused on the second and third island chain, as well as warfare in the larger pacific and possible global patrols.

One might argue that the very presence of such a class of boats is indication of their pricetag/capability level. If they were too expensive for what they offer, they wouldn't have gotten built. The fact the are built might suggest they are just in between ssk amd ssn subs, both in price and capability. All this is just a hypothetical explanation, not a claim.
