The Saudis in a veiled threat to the Russians said they can direct terrorism towards the Olympics if they didn't drop support for Assad in Syria.

Does that mean they can stop it as well? Does that mean if a terrorist attack does occur, Russia will blame Saudi Arabia? Were the Saudis that arrogant to make such a threat thinking the US was going to protect them?

When the whole Somali pirate situation was making all the news, you'd see video of Western navies doing their best to scare away potential pirate ships from shipping lanes. There was a Russian video that popped-up on how they deal with pirates. They were unleashing what looked like an early version of an AK-630 on a suspected pirate ship.

If there is a terrorist attack at the Olympics that kills a lot of people, I wouldn't be in Saudi Arabia.

Good point, the Saudis pretty much guaranteed that if any attacks occur, they will be blamed. They'd better hope nothing happens...

REPORT: The Saudis Offered Mafia-Style 'Protection' Against Terrorist Attacks At Sochi Olympics
GEOFFREY INGERSOLL

AUG. 27, 2013, 4:54 PM

REUTERS

Buried inside a Telegraph post about secret Russian and Saudi talks was a strange passive-aggressive alleged quote from the Saudi head of intelligence about terrorist attacks at the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
The talks — divulged in leaked documents — were allegedly about an oil deal that would stabilize Russia's markets, if Saudi Arabia curtailed the amount of oil it put on the global market. In exchange for their global price fixing — the Telegraph's Ambrose Evans-Pritchard writes that Russia "relies on an oil price near $100 to fund the budget" — Russia would back off its support for Assad.

But there was a threat allegedly hidden in there right along with the fruit.

From The Telegraph [emphasis theirs]:

[Soudi intel chief] Prince Bandar [bin Sultan] pledged to safeguard Russia’s naval base in Syria if the Assad regime is toppled, but he also hinted at Chechen terrorist attacks on Russia’s Winter Olympics in Sochi if there is no accord. “I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us,” he allegedly said.

Along with Saudi officials, the US allegedly gave the Saudi intelligence chief the thumbs up to conduct these talks with Russia, which comes as no surprise. Bandar is American-educated, both military and collegiate, served as a highly influential Saudi Ambassador to the U.S., and the CIA totally loves the guy.

From WSJ:

They [Saudi officials] believed that Prince Bandar, a veteran of the diplomatic intrigues of Washington and the Arab world, could deliver what the CIA couldn't: planeloads of money and arms, and, as one U.S. diplomat put it, wasta, Arabic for under-the-table clout.

Saudi Arabia's distaste for Syria and Iran is as epic as it is old, so its geopolitical alignments with the U.S. comes as no big surprise. The Saudis and Qataris have been running guns in line with American interests in the Arab uprisings for quite some time now.

On the flip side, Russia's (alleged) reaction is quite disconcerting, if you're in the anti-Assad camp.

Russia — notoriously rife with corruption and fat cat oligarchs — would rather keep supporting Assad than allegedly fix global oil prices or make lucrative weapons deals (another Saudi initiative).

That, folks, is simply astounding.

It's tremendously short-sighted if Saudi Arabia used the price-fixing card to keep oil above $100 a barrel so Russian can keep the cash flowing. Russia could bomb Saudi Arabia and that alone will send oil far above $100 a barrel.

At first I would think the US giving the thumbs up to such a message would be absurd. But then Obama seems to think he can play chicken with the world when he's the one that will chicken out in the end. Obama plays a very dangerous game.

Watch out if terrorists target only non-Western athletes.

Sragen, Indonesia - Erwiana Sulistyaningsih cut an unusual figure as she limped through Hong Kong airport in six T-shirts and two pairs of trousers on January 10. The extra layers did little to veil the injuries to her hands and feet and heavy facial swelling.Erwiana said she was dropped off that evening by her former employer, Law Wantung. The 23-year-old maid said her boss bought her a flight to her home country, Indonesia, gave her 100,000 rupiah ($8.40), and told her never to talk to anyone about what had happened to her in Hong Kong.

"She told me that she knew a lot of people in Indonesia and if I said anything she would have my parents killed," Erwiana told Al Jazeera, surrounded by her family in a hospital bed in Sragen, Central Java.Doctors at Amel Sehat Islamic Hospital say she is suffering from swelling of the brain from repeated blows to the head. She also has several broken teeth, a broken nose and her hands and feet are brown and swollen with cellulitis - an infection of the skin that resulted from her long-untreated wounds.Erwiana said her wounds are the product of seven months of abuse that she suffered while "working" as a domestic helper. The 100,000 rupiah she was given at the airport is the only remuneration she received, she said.

Give me just 5 minutes with this guy.. I'll make sure he can't touch another woman, child or innocent person ever again. Stories such as this really cheeses me off.

This is no joke, and could be as serious as it could be. I'm worried about the coming Winter Olympic. We will keep an eye on this event more.

(CNN) -- New details fueled debate Monday over security at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi: Wanted posters of a terrorism suspect on the loose, warships at the ready and a video threat from beyond the grave.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that his country has stepped up security and is prepared to handle any threats.
But some U.S. lawmakers -- and at least one Olympic athlete -- have said they're worried about the situation.
Hotels warned about terror suspect
Police in Sochi have handed out fliers at area hotels warning of a woman they believe could be a terrorist and who may currently be in the city.
One flier, obtained by CNN, asks workers to be on the lookout for Ruzanna "Salima" Ibragimova, described as the widow of a member of a militant group from the Caucasus region.
The woman, according to the flier, may be involved in organizing "a terrorist act within the 2014 Olympic region."
Hunt is on for possible Olympic bomber Putin: Gays 'can feel safe' at Sochi Terror video threatens Winter Olympics
CNN obtained a copy of the flier, which is dated January 15, from security staff at a hotel in Sochi. The flier claims authorities have received information about Ibragimova's possible arrival in the region last week.
Photos of Ibragimova have flooded television and social media reports from Sochi. Some describe her as a "black widow" -- a notorious type of terrorist that's emerged in Russia's clashes with Chechen separatists.
Many of them are wives of insurgents killed by government forces, and they've been blamed for high-profile suicide bombings.
Security experts stressed Monday that the woman is likely one of many suspects authorities are trying to find.
"I guarantee they're talking about this one black widow," former CIA officer Mike Baker said, "but there are others that they're also worried about."

I pray nothing happens and it's all just veil threats however if something serious do happen I am also afraid of the fallout and the subsequent snowball effect on the world stage. The Sochi Olympic Games is Putin's baby and if something really big do happen he may not hold back with the Chechens. While it's terrible if say a couple of locals gets killed in some small car explosion in an alleyway etc, it's a whole new ball game if foreign tourists, athletes gets killed/injured and the Games itself is canceled or major rescheduling occurs.

I think we all know deep down Putin is a narcisisstic sociopath and he really cares about the image he projects more than anything else. If the terrorists is successful in publicly humiliating him in front of the world, the consequent repercussions may be more than what we all want because it will affect more than just the terrorists.
