Look at how India had a warrant for actor Richard Gere's arrest just because he playfully kissed an Indian actress in public.

Playfully? I think not, he was ALL OVER her like she's some kind of brand new gerbil he hadn't met (ya know the old background story about Richard Gere and a gerbil look it up).:p;)

I'll say more like the alleged strip search on her that causes the most uproar.

Yes I agree US law enforcement went a bit too far, but the original sin was her cheap ass self, trying to cheat her domestic help out of legal wages, and lying to the US Government on the same.

Foreign diplomats paying domestic help less than US minimum wage is widespread. According to a former Indian Foreign Minister, there is a tacit agreement between the US and India that Indian staff will be paid the normal Indian wage. And this is NYC we are talking about here, full of foreign diplomats due to the presence of the UN. NY police wouldn't even give a parking ticket to them. There is definitely something going on behind the scene.

"This is in grave violation of the Vienna Convention. The US authorities knew she was a diplomat and yet they deliberately humiliated her. The US is well aware of the legal status of the case with the domestic help which was being pursued in a court of law in India. In fact, India had sought US help in the case. Yet the deliberate insult," sources said. The New York Police, sources say, was "following orders" that came from "higher-ups".

"With the United Nations in New York, diplomats from across the world live and work there. The New York Police knows better than to arrest and strip-search diplomats. This was a move aimed at testing India's response," sources added.

test them for what? seems more likely that if this was ordered by some "Higher Up" then perhaps it was meant to be a signal ending the Tacit agreement.

Something has to be up that they're not saying up front. If the authorities knew some crime was being committed, they just demand her to leave the US. I don't think this was some sort of test of how India would react. Given how sensitive India reacted before because of previous diplomatic slights, they should know it would test relations more. Very stupid because this would push India towards Russia and weaken any attempt to contain China. How many stories do we hear of Indian officials and movie stars that get extraordinary treatment when they enter the US?

Read my theory in the earlier reply. I don't think this is a real crisis, rather a conspiracy between the US and Indian government to defeat Modi in the coming election.

more food for thought. The father of the maid in question works for the US Embassy in India. The maid's whole family was given emergency visa and left India for the US the day before Ms. Khobragade was arrested.

I Don't buy it. This Administration really doesn't seem to me to be capable of getting it's act that together.

You may be right. That this really is the result of misjudgement on part of the State Department, and the Indian government saw a political opportunity and is milking it for all the political advantage it can get in the coming election.
But I have trouble believing that the Obama administration is that stupid.
