USS Liberty after it was "mistakenly attacked" by Israeli gunboats during the "Six Day War in June 1967" 26 Americans killed 134 wounded.

The ship was attacked by both Israeli gunboats and Mirage II aircraft. Egyptian markings???..not sure about that. The second link down give both US and Israeli accounts of the attack.

i was under the impression these aircraft had no markings, although their radio messages were in arabic.

Apparently the US navy was minutes away from nuking Cario. A immediate retalition strike against was ordered by the commander of a nearby task force but someone in Washington stopped the strike. I concede i have no firm source i saw it in a decumentary on the liberty attack over 5 years ago.

You prob heard the mastermind of the cole attack has in the past few days escaped from Yemeni prision.

Yep the US had planes in the air from the USS America & another CVA ready to strike with conventional weapons (don't know about nukes) when it was discovered the atttackers were Israeli then Pres Johnson called off the strike. Pres Johnson then reportly said..I paraphrase.."" I don't care how many men are killed I don't want to embarrass our ally Israel"..I think that is why to this day and forever no USN ship is named after Pres Johnson.
