JALALABAD, Afghanistan – Cpl. Emilio Diaz Jr., a 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment machinegunner with Combined Anti-Armor Team 1, Weapons Company, stands in front of a humvee before embarking on a mission near Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Diaz, a Brownsville, Texas native, received the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained while manning a .50 caliber machine gun in Iraq on 1/3’s last combat deployment when his humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device.
CAMP BLESSING, Afghanistan - A traditional Marine Corps memorial, featuring helmet, rifle, dog tags and boots, signifying the death of a fellow Marine in battle, stands in honor of Lance Cpl. Billy Brixey Jr., during a memorial service Jan. 31 aboard Camp Blessing. Brixey died Jan. 27 in Germany from wounds he sustained two days earlier in the Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan while serving with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Brixey, a motor transportation mechanic, was born on July 18, 1984 in Ferriday, La., and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2001, four days after the Sept. 11 attacks.
