The story as it was presented by the Dutch media didn't sound credible so I only accepted that something serious happened. I have not yet found a convincing account. One curious suggestion I heard was that it resulted from an action organized by pick pockets to make their trade easier. I'll just wait for more reliable news.

Russia is home to the Lord of the Rings’ fiery, evil kingdom of Mordor, and its foreign minister is a “sad little horse,” according to a Google Translate “technical error” that left the search giant scrambling.

Internet users began noticing the translations in the service’s Ukrainian to Russian function over the weekend, and posted screenshots on social media, The Telegraph reports.

Among the translations: Russians are “occupiers” -- an apparent reference to its annexation of Crimea -- Russia is “Mordor” and the surname of Sergey Lavrov is “grustnaya loshadka”, or “sad little horse”.

In the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began nearly two years ago, Ukrainian soldiers and activists have often referred to Russia as “Mordor,” the lair of chaos in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic, according to The Telegraph.

An embarrassed Google said in a statement to Russia media that the mistranslations were due to a “technical error."

“When Google Translate creates an automatic translation, it uses examples from hundreds of millions of documents, in order to distinguish which variant is most appropriate,” the company said.

The bug appeared fixed on Tuesday.

How would raping and sexual assaulting someone make pick pocketing easier? Their trade is to stay anonymous when they robbed their victims.o_O

hey delft, who told you this?
Well, Jura, I have now read the following in several places, and it has been confirmed.

According to the Koeln Police Chief, Wolfgang Albers, the perpetrators were from "North Africa and Arab countries". Then, Arnold Plickert, Vice President of the police union in North Rhine-Westphalia defended Albers MDR interview, saying, "This is just right, we must know who did this and it must also not be denied. To do so would go in a completely wrong direction. Whoever lives in our system of values, has to follow them. Whoever commits such offenses, our system must show its limits."

Apparently, women that night were surrounded and robbed by groups of up to 40 men, who then also sometimes committed group sexual assaults, including rape, against them.

But the Koeln Mayor, Henriette Reker, who was a strong proponent of the massive immigration, rejected a link between the violence and the immigration and refugee situation.

Guys, this behavior is atrocious and unacceptable in any civilized country.

It is now well established that in Koeln and other cities, that many woman were sexually assaulted and quite a few raped by groups of young African and Arabian men on New Year's.

A very lamentable part is the reaction from some of the politicians , like this Mayor.

Apparently she feels that she must defend her immigration and refugee stance, and try and distance that stance from what happened. But the facts are what they are and the Police Chief, and the Police Union have made it clear what happened.

So now, this mayor, says that European women should have a better code of conduct to prevent the assaults and rapes...in essence, blaming the victims.

I find this almost unbelievable, and something that will only promote more of the same.

If any particular cultures are generating such behavior, then immigration should screen for things that lead to these actions and not allow them into the nation. It is folly to do so, and then think that all of a sudden people who have been raised a certain way, when being introduced to western culture will suddenly change and reform.

This is only putting their own citizens in danger. I do not care what culture it is...what color the people are...what is important for any leader is to protect your own citizens. My guess is that the women who were assaulted themselves came from different ethnicities and races. All of them should be protected on the streets and in the squares of their cities.

An answer: I heard the remark about pickpockets on the radio without back story.

The problem with the whole story is that it is not being told. We are waiting for more information!

One problem in at least several Western European countries is a lack of police manpower. This was complained about by the Cologne police and public. Yesterday it was remarked on my Dutch radio station that abolishing railway police, part of a chaotic and expensive police reorganization meant to save money, let to dangerous situations for railway workers but that no solution would be available. I often hear on BBC Radio 4 stories about British police incompetence.

I think that the economic situation doesn't allow sufficient taxes to be raised, just as a reasonable interest rate would be "damaging" to the economy as if the resulting malinvestment resulting from the sickly low interest rate is not damaging. Also think of the results of the low interest rates on the ability of pension funds to pay the promised pensions. These pensions should be raised to keep in step with inflation. Recently several pensions were even decreased!
In other words the economy is in much worse shape than governments dare acknowledge.

Just some remarks about the current situation. :(

Cologne police chief 'relieved of his duties' after New Year sex attacks
The chief of Cologne’s police force has been relieved of his duties after a string of sexual assaults were reported in the German city on New Year’s Eve, German media has reported.

Wolfgang Albers, 60, had been criticised for the handling of the violence, with a leaked police report describing this week how officers were initially overwhelmed by events outside the city’s train station, after which more than 100 women filed criminal complaints of sexual assault and robbery, including two accounts of rape.

The report, leaked to the German newspaper Bild, said women were forced to “run a gauntlet … beyond description” to reach or leave the station. An announcement confirming Albers’ resignation was expected later on Friday.

Earlier the German interior ministry said asylum seekers were among those involved in the violence, with spokesman Tobias Plate saying 18 of the 32 people arrested were asylum seekers suspected of crimes ranging from theft to assault. None was suspected of committing sexual assaults of the kind that prompted outrage in

over the past week.

Plate said the vast majority of the 32 criminal acts documented by federal police on the night were related to theft and bodily injury. Three were related to sexual assaults, but police had no names linked to them.

Of the 32 people detained, nine were Algerian, eight Moroccan, five Iranian, and four Syrian. Two German citizens, an Iraqi, a Serb and a US citizen were also among those detained.

The incidents

have led to accusations of a police and media cover-up to avoid anti-foreigner sentiment following Angela Merkel’s open-door policy towards refugees and migrants. More than a million refugees have entered Germany in the past 12 months.

The chancellor said on Thursday the New Year assaults were unacceptable and that deportation policy needed to be continually under review “to send a clear signal to people who do not want to stick to our legal framework”.

Merkel said she would change the law on deportations and increase police numbers. “We must also keep talking about the basis of our cultural coexistence in Germany and what people rightly expect is that actions follow words,” she added.

Victims have described their attackers as being Arab or north African in appearance but a Cologne lawyer joined a growing number of people on Thursday who insisted the description was incomplete.

“Clients I’ve spoken to who were there at the station to peacefully see in the new year say that there were also Albanian, Kurds, Montenegrins, Syrians and Iraqis involved in the tumult,” said Mehdi Labidi, a Tunisian-German.

Germany’s justice minister said asylum seekers could be deported if they were found to have participated in the attacks.

Evidence has emerged that similar attacks had taken place in seven other German cities. After Cologne, Hamburg appears to have been the worst affected. Out of a total of 167 complaints to police of attacks in the cities – around two-thirds of them being described as sexual assault, including two cases of rape – 100 relate to Cologne, and 53 to Hamburg.

Meanwhile, Finnish police reported an unusually high level of sexual harassment in Helsinki on New Year’s Eve and said they had been tipped off about plans by groups of asylum seekers to sexually harass women.

Helsinki’s deputy police chief, Ilkka Koskimaki, said: “There hasn’t been this kind of harassment on previous New Year’s Eves or other occasions for that matter … This is a completely new phenomenon in Helsinki.”

Security guards hired to patrol the city on New Year’s Eve told police there had been widespread sexual harassment at a central square where around 20,000 people had gathered for celebrations.

Swedish police said at least 15 young women had reported being groped by groups of men on New Year’s Eve in the city of Kalmar. A spokesman said groups of men encircled women on a crowded square and groped them. He said no one was physically injured but many of those targeted were terrified.

Very sad indeed...but not surprising.

This is what happens when Political Correctness goes amok and so the Chief, who simply told the truth, is relieved by a politician who is wholly invested in a narrative that cannot countenance what is actually happening.

Well, she cannot "relieve" the Police Union Vice President who verified the Chiefs statements...and I bet there is a law suite waiting to happen between that Chief and the City.
