Ive been wondering for a while, but what US fleet uses San Francisco as its home port.
I remember about 22yrs ago I was mucking about at Fishermans wharf watching a fleet sale in with what I felt, a lot of razz matazz.I could never figure what it was about, as there were flypasts I think an airforce acrobatic team ( Blue Angels)were doing their thing there as well, but I don't recall seeing a carrier. People were out in their thousands on the shoreline. I couldnt help thinking , what a patriotic lot these yanks are, welcoming their boys home from a tour of duty

None..any more. 22 years ago the Bay Area was teaming with US Navy bases.

NAS Alameda..Home port to three CVs plus a reserve carrier air wing.

NAS Moffet Feild ..Home of Pacific Fleet P-3 Orion's.

NS Mare Island.. Major submarine shipyard and base.

NS Treasure Island... Training base for USN forces in the San Francisco Bay.

All closed. Those forces have all either been disbanded or been transfered to other bases.
