Enlisted sailors forced out while Navy has more admirals than ships

Norfolk, Va. - In World War II, there were 30 Navy ships for every admiral. Now, the Navy has more admirals than ships.
That’s a point not lost on Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner.
“I want to see the Pentagon cut back on some of this “brass creep” both in terms of numbers and some of these perks,” Warner said.
Not long ago, the Navy forced out 3,000 mid-career sailors. Military budget cuts have scrapped air shows, delayed deployments, and threatened civilian contractors with two-week furloughs. Craig Quigley, a retired rear admiral who heads the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance, says the cuts — while not as bad as first feared — will ripple past the local bases.
(Web Extra: In the interview below, RADM John Kirby talks about what some call the “entourage culture” surrounding top generals and admirals and whether it is necessary or appropriate. He also talked about why the Navy had forced out some sailors but is hiring others.)

“You’re not going to buy the new car, you’re going to fix up the old one. You might cancel the family vacation. You are going to have to adjust your own household finances to accommodate 14 days without pay,” he said. “If you are a small business with only a handful of employees, you might not survive.”

At the same time, the Pentagon has added admirals and generals. There are now nearly a thousand. Many of those top officers are surrounded with entourages including chauffeurs, chefs and executive aids. Top flag officers have private jets always at the ready. They live in sometimes palatial homes and frequently travel in motorcades. Former Democratic Senator Jim Webb asked the Pentagon why the Air Force has more four-star generals than the Army, even though the Army has almost twice the manpower. Across all service branches, Warner said, the number of people at the bottom has shrunk while the number of generals and admirals has swelled.
Investigations have shown some in power misuse these perks. General Wiliam “Kip” Ward was demoted for using his staff and military vehicles to take his wife shopping, to spas and on vacations in $700-a-night suites, all at taxpayer expense.
“If you’re a four-star, and you’ve got a G-5 aircraft waiting for your private use, or governmental use, 24/7, that doesn’t make sense to me,” Warner said. “That all adds up, and it just sends the wrong signal, when we are cutting back on the number of troops, and soldiers, sailors and airmen, yet we are increasing the number of generals and flag officers.”
Slate.com estimated that the perks and entourages afforded flag officers cost a million dollars for every admiral and general.
Rear Admiral John Kirby, speaking from the Pentagon, says he understands Sen. Warner’s concerns.

“I can’t say honestly that there aren’t some generals or admirals who perhaps surround themselves with more people than they need,” Kirby said. “That is certainly a fair argument, a fair criticism to make. But I don’t think it is the norm. I don’t think it is taken advantage of by the great majority of them.”
Kirby added that many of the admirals and generals have labored for years under massive wartime burdens, and need skilled officers and aides to help manage their workloads.
To Tiffany Waterfield, that doesn’t make sense.
“You’re getting your steak dinner while we don’t know if we’re going to eat Ramen or eat at all,” she said. “So it hurts. It definitely makes me angry.”
Waterfield’s fiance served 12 years when he was told he was no longer needed. He became one of the 3,000 sailors dismissed from service by the Enlisted Retention Board. Waterfield said he was on track to be a chief, and now they are facing the possibilty they’ll be homeless.
“We’re on food stamps,” she said. “I have never in my life needed help or handouts for things like that. So it is hard. I don’t know what to do.”

Plane was said to be transporting 5 heavy armored vehicles. Mayday call said cargo load shifted. Noticed gear was not even up when it should be because they were probably too stressed inside trying to secure the load.

This is why the load master is so damn important!!! If heavy cargo shifts the plane falls like a rock and you're as good as dead!!!!

Oh man I would freak out if I were in that first two vehicles in front of the car with the dashboard webcam seeing a big airplane coming down like that! My condolences to all the victims families.

Unfortunately I think the Taliban will resurge and very likely take over Afghanistan again once US forces leave. Our kids or grandkids will fight a similar war 20, 30 years from now (if we're lucky otherwise sooner) and history repeats itself in some form or other. Not trying to be pessimistic but this is the reality of humankind.

You know too many countrys have invested too much in Afghanistan over the last 13 years to allow it to slip back into its dark ages

more than 3 million young Afghans have mobile phones, Internet is available and young girls can go to school in numbers like never before, people are living better conditions and the Afghan national army is getting on its own feet

And what happens in Afghanistan does effect what happens in the rest of the world, so the international community will not allow it to fail, otherwise all that effort and people killed will have been in vain

Also although everyone is pulling out a lot will remain, there is permanent bases in Afghanistan, foreign military will always be there as advisors and step in if help is needed, the massive bases in GCC are also not far away, let's say some extremists take power they could expect USAF power back I'm action at a moments notice

What I am worried about is the double games India is playing, India has dozens of offices, consulates, embassy's other governments organisations inside Afghanistan, they are not there stamping visas they are there collecting intelligence and equipping groups against the interest of stability in the region

Just 2 days ago a clash between Afghan and Pakistan resulted in injures and deaths, this is not good and serves in the intersts of RAW and other intelligence services working from India

You can chalk this up to very poor diplomacy and a lack of respect shown to the Pakistani Government by the BHO administration, even before the election Mr. Obama threatened drone strikes into Pakistan, Westerners including BHO have no clue of how to manage an insurgent population, such as the taliban, and in fact probably facilitated the return of Mrs. Bhuto. One wonders if this whole administration slept through history class, Mr Bush was executing a very specific and strategic withdrawal from Ahghanistan, when as per our constitution his term in office ended.

Drone strikes and the incipient civilian casualties have restored the taliban to credibility, and made aliens of the Afghan, and Pakistani governments, closing our routes of overland egress, in an attempt to be smart by 2x, we have alienated and abandoned our friends, and in many cases left them to perish, just as Ambassador Stevens and his rescuers were left...in Benghazi, a third grader could figure this out.....so now we have to fly everything of significant value out, and destroy the stuff that we dare not leave behind to the insurgents, just a total and complete ......... ............! So in spite of a very experienced aircrew, something broke loose and rolled aft as evidenced by the extreme high alpha as the video begins the aircraft continues to pitch to nearly vertical before the horrible stall break and pitch out to the right as a likely result of FULL RIGHT Rudder and Aileron deflection in attempting to arrest the roll to the left. It is quite obvious that the aircrew does EVERYTHING RIGHT, and with another 1,000' might have fully recovered the aircraft as they broke the stall, and regained yaw control and had begun a pull out of the ensuing dive, God have mercy on their souls.........

MODs, I realize I may be over the line here and my sincere apologies if I am, please feel free to edit or add your two cents as desired, I bite my tongue over and over, but sometime this stuff just comes out!

Also gear and flaps are left down in a situation such as this because the lowered landing gear may lower the stalling speed and will to some extent induce drag and add stability to keep speed from exceeding VMC, probably just had take-off slats and flaps???? Brat

Another one down, in Kryzikstan, KC-135 with three SOB, lights off shortly after departure????? flying fuel into Afghanistan! during the Bush years the press bombarded us 10 times a day with a body count, they do cover for the BHO administration, this ownership of the Newsmedia by this administration is unprecedented in our history, and it is far more dangerous than any foreign military threat, sheesh! looks like the 47% are running the show.

Camp Pendleton, Ca -Hospitalman 1st Class Benny Flores, a corpsman serving with Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, listens to Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus, commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), after receiving the Silver Star during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, May 3. Flores was recognized for his actions on April 28, 2012, while serving with Regional Command Southwest providing medical support on a mission to Zaranj, Nimroz province, Afghanistan.

When the bomb blasted his truck into the air and insurgents started shooting, “Doc Flores” went to work. The Navy hospital corpsman was deafened by the explosion. He couldn’t hear the bullets whizzing by, but he saw his Marines lying in the street.

Petty Officer 1st Class Benny Flores ran back and forth four times through gunfire to administer aid and help the wounded take cover from the ambush, military officials said. Blood from his own shrapnel wounds flowed down his arm, mingling with the blood of his comrades smeared across his tattered uniform sleeves.

For his actions April 28, 2012 in southwestern Afghanistan, Flores was awarded the Silver Star Friday at Camp Pendleton. He was selected for the nation’s third-highest medal for valor in combat because of the lifesaving medical care he provided several U.S. and Afghan troops despite heavy gunfire and his own serious injuries, the Marine Corps announced.

Flores, a soft-spoken, humble sailor who grew up in Guam and Tinian, didn’t wake up that morning thinking “today’s the day I’m going to be a hero,” Maj. Gen. Charles Mark Gurganus said at the ceremony on the 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company parade deck.

Perhaps no one is confronted more intimately with the horrors of war than hospital corpsmen and medics. When explosives rip apart a human body or stop a beating heart, the person the corpsman tries to save is often a friend or comrade.

Afterward, they often overlook the many they saved, haunted by the ones they couldn’t.

For Doc Flores, his own concussion and lacerations were serious enough to require hospitalization. He didn’t worry about that until he was airborne with the wounded in the medevac flight to Camp Bastion.

“Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Flores steadfastly refused treatment for his own wounds until all of his comrades were treated. By his extraordinary guidance, zealous initiative, and total dedication to duty, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Flores reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service,” according to his citation signed by Gen. James Amos, the Marine Corps commandant, on behalf of the president.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jason Flores, a Kiowa helicopter pilot in the Army, couldn’t believe they were talking about his little brother when he heard about it. Doc Flores had always been generous, always willing to spot his brother some cash, always the last to leave after cleaning up from a party. But what he did that day in Afghanistan, “It touched my heart,” Jason Flores said.

When he was wounded, Flores was two months into his tour, his third combat deployment after previous ones to Iraq and Kuwait. His wife Jerianne, his high school sweetheart and mother of their 4-year-old daughter, wanted to choke him through the telephone line when she found out he chose to remain in Afghanistan until the end, Flores said.

He stayed because of the bond between the Marines and their corpsman. “We’ve got to take care of each other.”

Before he left Afghanistan he started wearing a black metal memorial bracelet to Pruitt. It adorns his wrist even now.

“I wish we all came back,” Flores said. He thinks about Pruitt almost every day, always wondering “if there was anything I could have done more.”

Amen to every bit of that, Popeye.

God bless Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Flores and all with whom he serves. His actions represent what individuals like him do when they see their comrades in harms way, injured and taking fire. They respond, heedless to their own danger, to save their brothers and sisters.

Well , Taliban use cell phones to detonate IEDs and Internet to spread propaganda ;) Seriously , that doesn't mean a thing . My own personal prediction about the future of Afghanistan : there would be major cities and roads controlled by central government and "tribal lands" controlled by Taliban . I don't think there would be Fall of Kabul like in 1992. , primarily because Mujahedin coalition at the time had support of both Pakistan and US to overthrow Najibullah government , and there is none for Taliban now .

Actually, what Asif said, that more than 3 million young Afghans have mobile phones, Internet is available and young girls can go to school in numbers like never before, is true and it means a lot.

Countering that by saying that the Taliban is abusing cell phones and the internet and using them to kill people and supress freedom, and implying that the two cancel each other just out does not make sense or logically follow.

200 million American use cell phones and the internet. Because a very small percent of the [population that are drug lords and criminals abuse those things to criminal ends, does that too not, "mean a thing?"

The two are not something you can use to negate the other.

What Asif said is true, and it is a very good thing, and would be a good thing whether criminally minded individuals or radical fundamentalists use them for ill or not.

One is to be condoned and promoted, the other is to be tracked down and stopped.

I agree with most of this, though there will be some "tribal lands," that the Afghan military will be successful in defending and keeping out of the control of the Taliban.

And I'm saying modern technologies like Internet and cell phones are ideologically neutral , you could use them and still believe in whatever you want . For example , many of the 9/11 attackers were highly educated , lived in the West and yet they were what they were . Same could be said for Tsarnaev brothers , even for Osama bin Laden .

This is a US military thread, we like only to discuss military things because that is what we enjoy and some here do, so no politics, however by our post it seems like you do need a answer

I am a Muslim, my religion is Islam, and i am British, born and brought up on the East Coast of Scotland this is my home and this is my country, I see myself as a Scottish-Pakistani, because my parents were from Pakistan and its a country I visit every year, and as many here will tell you, I graduated, did my PhD and now work, not that I'm more educated than the next but there is many more like me, over 1 billion Muslims throughout the world, educated and professional

By your post it seems like your generalising the whole Muslim community and in doing so showing a very narrow mind, the vast vast majority of Muslims are peace loving people, the biggest losers in this terrorism is us, as our name is tarnished by the few rotten apples that get the majority of media attention, does this mean all Christians are bad because few white folks are KKK? Or all Irish are bad because the IRA are Irish? No certainly not

Don't judge majority by actions of the few minority, every basket has some rotten apples, and that is the message you should take from this
