The CIA were happy trying to kill world leaders the world over, but they never touched the USSR.

And the USSR didn't touch the US gov. When Kennedy was assassinated, the USSR reached out to make sure the US knew they had nothing to do with it.

Or even Lavrentiy Beria style
i doubt it. Russia’s aim is essentially defensive. Russia’s stake in it and grievances that led to this stake is real and vast. There is no alternative if Russia is to avoid swiftly dwindling to minor or power it no consequence unable to pursue any independent foreign policy. And Russia’s enemies really can not invade to take down putin. It would have to be a west backed coup to take out Putin. There is no real alternate path possible for russia that otherwise might have made someone else loyal to russia to want to try something else.

seriously, while superficial public discussion may fail to reveal this, Russian stake in this is greater than even china’s stake in Taiwan.

More back peddling from the UK:
Downing Street has rowed back after saying sweeping sanctions were designed to "bring down the Putin regime".

No10 said Prime Minister Boris Johnson's official spokesman "mis-spoke" when he made the remark in a media briefing today.

The spokesman insisted Britain was not seeking "regime change" in Moscow, where Vladimir Putin runs a nuclear-armed nation.

What was Biden thinking letting Boris speak so freely?

Russia should turn around and call this out. Yes you are trying to instigate regime change. You're provoking us and your dithering stance is making it worse.

The UK government is weak enough as it is.
