This entire conflict can be understood in the following manner:
1. Russia is ruled by someone who came up through the ranks during the time of very careful strategic and behavior calculations by both sides poised on the threshold of being destroyed by one wrong move on either side.
2. US has sidelined everyone who rose through that careful era of tender hooks and diligent game theorying, and is ruled instead by triumphalist hacks and shallow thinking opportunists and ideologuess who think because their previous generation won and they are more powerful they can do no wrong, and have no need to learn the underlying mechanics of careful calculation.

There was nothing to gain for Putin over the existing status quo. Modern Russia lacks the old communist party apparatus which would have stopped such absurd ambitions a long time ago.

WTF? How are they still alive? Russians showing too much restraint IMO.

I am sure these idiots will get killed just from driving around with lit Molotov cocktails in their cars.

Idiots. Pure idiots.

As for why the Russians didn't kill them, I bet it had to do with the attack being a pure surprise and the Russians not being on guard.

what he stands to gain is the continued credibility of russia as a nuclear power and with that an ability to pursue an independent economic and foreign policy. Unlike china, russia has poor industrial organization, moribund demographics and little extent economic and financial power outside resource exploitation, russia would decay to a minor power of no cobsequence if her nuclear deterrence is nullified and she can no longer pursue independent foreign and economic policies.

this contest has to be understood in the context of russia having as many nuclear weapon as the US, and has vastly more stake in its outcome than the US. this is between the US and Russia. other european countries are just noise.
