Something I noticed, even a small city like Kharkiv has metro system, about 40km
This is about the same as the non light-rail portion of the LA subway system.
US and Canadian cities always say "can't build subways, too expensive".
I guess this is why USSR doesn't exist anymore

More like the USSR doesn't exist anymore because of the like >20% of the GDP military spending

If Ukraine by some farfetched chance stalemate or even push back Russia, Russia will be forced to use some of those veiled threats from Putin earlier. Shit hits the fan for us all.

If Russia completely annihilates Ukraine as an independent sovereign state things will keep boiling until shit hits the fan for us all and much sooner than later.

I think the only somewhat realistic compromise is partitioning Ukraine into a larger western and smaller eastern part.
The west part can do whatever it wants, join NATO, EU or whatever.
The east part will do what Russia wants, become a vassal, join Russia or whatever.

This might not be pretty or what either side (including the west) really wants but might be seen as a (minor) victory by both sides.
Ukraine will survive as a independent sovereign state for the foreseeable future paying their way out with land and Russia (aka Putin) gets a way out of this mess without loosing (too much) face and some of their security concerns solved.

This kind of solution is actual not that uncommon but I fear the current leadership (including the west) is not up to snuff with too much virtue signalling (and yes, that includes Putin). Not a lot of those pragmatic sobs politicians from the cold war left in the current generation.

Who knows maybe the EU will accept it or give it a pathway. You know, if the EU says smth like "if you manage to win, we will accept you" (they can always break their word later lol) there will be tremendous morale boost with people volunteering to take arms.

I am telling you guys, Eastern European countries want like crazy to join EU. That's why Russia's weak economy was always its biggest problem
Who wouldn’t wanna join cool, rich kids club? EU can atleast sell a Prosperous Ukraine dream, even if its just a dream. While Russia has nothing to offer to Ukraine. Atleast if you Ally with China, you have a vast market to sell your stuff.

Bill Ackman lost money on Herbal Life and other venture so he just want to make sure he can profit handsomely from his investments in the war sector. Besides, easy for him to armchair general when he doesn't have A SKIN IN THE GAME/WAR if and when military confrontation between U.S./NATO Russia happens.

But the reason for this bellicose rhetoric happening is due to Russian forces failing to live up to their hype of military juggernaut and impressing the intellectual midgets and wannabe special forces warriors in America and the west. Which is why the previously unthinkable scenario or assumptions (No land war in Asia, and don't poke the bear) are being upended slowly and with increasing confidence day by day.

War is also a battle of perceptions and right now the western perception of the conflict is heavily tilted towards the U.S./NATO/Ukraine side to the detriment of Russia. Russia without being feared militarily is in my opinion quite dangerous.

Looks like #nuclearwar is trending in the UK, so is Liz Truss. Western media have finally stopped ignoring the nuclear threats and are running with it.

The balls now back in the western court. Are they going to deny that we're in a nuclear crisis, or are they going to acknowledge it, and start making preparations?

Zelenski announces he will release inmates from jail to press them into service.

Táctics of a winner, no doubt /s

As a parallel, there was articles in the US, urging to relax the criminal background check standards due to inflation and labor shortage, over in the American economics thread I mentioned possibility of someday US gov either conscripting felons to fight (there is also a shortage of recruits too apparently) or to commute sentences in exchange for service in war...

Its just bizarre that its now really happening, albiet in the Ukraine first...

Ball? These guys are clowns. Hell they might even destroy the ball instead. The western side is being lead by amateurs as per Alexander Mercouris weeks ago.

Russia's Kommersant newspaper quoted two diplomatic sources as saying that during their closed-door meeting on Thursday Lavrov had asked Truss if she recognised Russian sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh - two regions in the south of the country where Russia has been building up its forces.

Kommersant said Truss replied that Britain would never recognise them as Russian, and had to be corrected by her ambassador.
