Given how much the Russians seem to have been stymied there, a fair amount. It would allow the Russians to free up what I get the impression is considerable resources for advancing.
If I am recruited as a saboteur, I would shoot at random trees and stuff and claim that I have shot Ukrainians. As you said, no one would know.

The U.S was thousands of miles from Vietnam, the Russians are next door.
US. goal was to United to south with the North, the goal of the Russians is to separate the East from the West.
Once the Russians annex the East of Ukraine will be almost impossible to take the region back with out a major war.
