Because Russia is declining, while China is rising. China does not need to rush military action.

That would be an indicator whether or not the air assaults on the other Ukrainian airports near Kiev would be successful.

It was a really stupid ambush because of all the guys wasting ammo and giving away their position with useless small arms fire when the helicopters were still well outside of effect range.

They might have had more luck had they held their nerve and only fired with the MANPADs when the helos were close to give the pilots minimal warning and no reaction time. Although that might not have worked either if the helicopters had up to date self defence suites, which would have triggered automatically upon missile launch detection.
