There are sacrifices in every war. I hope these heroes' death weren't in vain, and will propel their comrades in achieving Russia's strategic goal of de-Nazification in Ukraine.

A painful reminder of the cost of war, beyond the mere numbers and images.
In one of the other military forums, a good poster just lost both daughter and son who had been serving in the DLNR.
Extremely sad to read. And why this conflict has to come to an end, not just the intervention that started a month ago, but the whole war that started back in 2014. Hopefully with the removal of all extremists, otherwise it'll have been for nothing.

Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Kuzmin, a graduate of the Ryazan Airborne Academy, was killed in action during a special military operation in Ukraine. He was from the 234th Airborne Regiment.

Ah I thought we have a new obituary thread.

Like all the other dead: When death becomes visiual, a name, face and biography, the horror is even more realistic. These men were professionals and aware of the danger. They lived with a calculated risk. And now their parents, wives, children and friends mourn in agony and grieve. All the valuable life is lost.

RIP, to all the victims - 99% innocent - of this shit war. And consolation to the surviving dependants.

Regards
Koala

what I don't understand is, why are Ukrainian forces fighting to the end and why has Ukraine essentially issued a "Not One Step Back" order? Typically in countries with ideology and GDP per capita like Ukraine, the military is demoralized because the government is viewed as corrupt, spineless and sellout. what's the point in defending the regime that allows you to be exploited? what's the difference between Russian boss and Ukrainian boss, after all? Russia has 3x higher GDP per capita overall, 5x higher in Moscow.

In most cases of a country with low GDP per capita fighting a defensive war, it is very difficult for them to not suffer a collapse in morale even fighting weaker enemies, unless they have strong ideology. Witness how Syrian Army collapsed against a few rebels, 30k worth of Iraqi armor flee against 3k ISIS, Afghan National Army surrendered to Taliban in weeks, NRA surrender by the millions vs PLA, South Koreans collapsing against North Koreans, PAVN overrunning ARVN within 2 years after US left, etc. Every time when faced with a strong, ideological enemy with offensive mindset, developing country armies just shatter.

This is a stupid argument. Ukrainians weren't singled out by a Georgian-led Soviet government dominated by Caucasians. Besides, by using this argument, you are basically nullifying deaths from nation-wide collectivization and purges. Does a Russian death mean anything to you? An Armenian? Are Ukrainian deaths somehow superior to Georgian/Uzbek/Belarusian/Kazakh deaths? Ukraine doesn't get to to single itself out for its suffering, yet ignore the damage which some of its elements caused to others.

I think you answered your own question. I don't know much about Ukrainians but frankly, I don't think Putin should have said in his infamous speech "Russia (Soviet) is responsible for the creation of Modern Ukraine" and questioning the country's current statehood. This became a war of national identity for Ukrainians. That's a pretty strong ideological reason to fight.
